Technics SL-1210GAE Anniversary Turntable Announced

Technics has announced a special anniversary limited edition SL-1210GAE turntable which will be available in Australia from July.

Limited to just 700 units, the special edition Technics SL-1210GAE has been produced to mark the brand's 55th anniversary.

Based on the revered Grand Class SL-1200G hi-fi turntable, the SL-1210GAE features a stealthy black colour scheme that covers the aluminium top panel which also sports a meticulously anodised black brushed hairline finish. Additionally, the operation buttons and tonearm also employ a high-quality black finish that results in a uniform, premium appearance. The only break away from the classy black is a special badge on the top panel inscribed with the unique serial number to signify that it is a 55th-anniversary model.

Taking a leaf out of the flagship SL-1000R's book, this special edition turntable features a specially developed zinc insulator that includes αGEL, a soft gel-like material with excellent shock absorbing properties, we are told. The high-density zinc die-cast housing offers excellent vibration damping characteristics as well as excellent long-term reliability, says Technics. Additionally, the 10-mm-thick top panel joins a three-layered construction of die-cast aluminium, BMC (Bulk Moulding Compound), and heavyweight-class rubber. This four-layered construction combines high rigidity as well as more vibration damping.

The Technics SL-1210GAE's platter features a three-layered construction with a rigidly combined brass top-plate, an aluminium die-cast core platter and a solid rubber coating covering its entire rear surface to eliminate unwanted resonance. This also delivers smooth rotational stability and high inertial mass surpassing the SP-10MK2 (the direct-drive turntable standard used by broadcast stations worldwide), as well as having more than twice the inertial mass of the SL-1200MK5.

The SL-1210GAE employs a coreless direct-drive motor (with no iron core) that, says Technics, eliminates cogging. Also, the twin-rotor construction reduces the bearing load while maintaining high torque, and also reduces minute vibration during rotation. Adding to the SL-1210GAE's 2020 credentials, the motor control technology used was developed for Blu-ray devices. Switching the drive mode depending on the operational status of the motor helps achieve a high starting torque, and high-speed stability for optimum playback states the manufacturer.

The tonearm included with this anniversary turntable employs lightweight magnesium which has a high damping effect. Technics tells us that cold drawing the material achieves the requisite high-precision as well as improving the material's characteristics. Naturally, Technics' traditional gimbal suspension construction with the horizontal rotation axis and the vertical rotation axis intersecting at a single central point is also present.

PERFECT BALANCE

Before each turntable leaves the Japanese plant where the SL-1210GAE is hand-assembled, the balance of the turntable is adjusted using specialised high-precision balance adjustment equipment for each and every item after the turntable is assembled. Turntables that have undergone adjustment are labelled with a sticker reading “BALANCED” to indicate that individual adjustment has been made.

Finally, a nice touch is that the strobe light can be switched off, allowing you to concentrate on the music more effectively, especially when enjoying it in a dimmed environment.

Available locally from July, 40 units are earmarked for Australia and will sell for $6,999 RRP.
