Off the back of the announcement of their HD 660 S Over-Ear headphones, Sennheiser has also announced an update to their IE 800 ear-canal headphones.

The press release reads:

Audio specialist Sennheiser is once again redefining compact, take-anywhere audiophile sound – with a new generation of the groundbreaking IE800 ear-canal headphones.

Engineered and hand-crafted in Germany, Sennheiser says the new IE 800 S features improved acoustics with brilliant trebles and a refined bass sound.

Manuel Ricke who looks after 'Audiophile' products at Sennheiser told StereoNET:

With the original IE 800, we set a new standard with the creation of genuinely audiophile-grade earphones. Now, we are taking that original vision even further with the new IE 800 S.

According to Sennheiser, the Extra Wide Band (XWB) driver has been further refined, and the proprietary 7mm transducer delivers exceptional detail, lifelike imaging and brilliant treble and improved bass response.

An acoustic phenomenon known as the 'masking effect' has apparently been overcome in the new model thanks to Sennheiser's patented dual-chamber absorver system they call 'D2CA'.

The absorber system removes the energy from any masking resonances to prevent unwanted peaks, making even the finest nuances of sound audible.

The new IE 800 S look has been subtly refreshed with the ceramic housing being finished in an elegant, contemporary matt black finish and treated with a premium scratch-resistant coating.

To ensure a perfect fit for all ears, the IE 800 S is supplied with Comply Foam tips. The tips ensure a custom fit within the ear canal.

Finally, Sennheiser's IE 800 S is supplied with a 3.5mm standard cable, as well as 4,4mm Pentaconn and 2.5mm balanced connectors.

    applause awards

Each time StereoNET reviews a product, it is considered for an Applause Award. Winning one marks it out as a design of great quality and distinction – a special product in its class, on the grounds of either performance, value for money, or usually both.

Applause Awards are personally issued by StereoNET’s global Editor-in-Chief, David Price – who has over three decades of experience reviewing hi-fi products at the highest level – after consulting with our senior editorial team. They are not automatically given with all reviews, nor can manufacturers purchase them.

The StereoNET editorial team includes some of the world’s most experienced and respected hi-fi journalists with a vast wealth of knowledge. Some have edited popular English language hi-fi magazines, and others have been senior contributors to famous audio journals stretching back to the late 1970s. And we also employ professional IT and home theatre specialists who work at the cutting edge of today’s technology.

We believe that no other online hi-fi and home cinema resource offers such expert knowledge, so when StereoNET gives an Applause Award, it is a trustworthy hallmark of quality. Receiving such an award is the prerequisite to becoming eligible for our annual Product of the Year awards, awarded only to the finest designs in their respective categories. Buyers of hi-fi, home cinema, and headphones can be sure that a StereoNET Applause Award winner is worthy of your most serious attention.
