Raising The Bar with Yamaha

Soundbar expert Yamaha, has enhanced its entry level YAS-103 model giving it Bluetooth to link wirelessly to mobile devices plus a free app to navigate its bundle of features.

The YAS-103 in the US will retail for a suggested $299, the same price as the earlier model.

The YAS-103 has dual built-in down-firing subwoofers,  Air Surround Xtreme to generate virtual 7.1-channel surround sound, Dolby Digital and DTS decoding, two full-range drivers, two down-firing subwoofers, a bass reflex port and Advanced Bass Extension Processing for surround sound.

It’s also wall-mountable, has two optical inputs, one coaxial input, one analog input and a learning feature that enables a user’s TV remote to control select soundbar functions.  If the soundbar blocks a TV’s remote sensor, the bar’s built-in IR repeater passes through the TV remote-control signals.

Yamaha’s UniVolume technology helps to liquidate volume spikes when a TV commercial begins blaring away, channels are changed, or sources are switched is also part of the feature pack.

In the new bar, Yamaha’s Bluetooth-enabled Home Theater Controller app enables iOS and Android devices to adjust input selection, surround modes and other settings.

The slim bar lacks a separate outboard subwoofer, said A/V products general manager Bob Goedken, because “many soundbar shoppers want deep, rich bass to add impact to TV and movie viewing, but they just don’t want the clutter of a separate subwoofer in the room.”

    applause awards

Each time StereoNET reviews a product, it is considered for an Applause Award. Winning one marks it out as a design of great quality and distinction – a special product in its class, on the grounds of either performance, value for money, or usually both.

Applause Awards are personally issued by StereoNET’s global Editor-in-Chief, David Price – who has over three decades of experience reviewing hi-fi products at the highest level – after consulting with our senior editorial team. They are not automatically given with all reviews, nor can manufacturers purchase them.

The StereoNET editorial team includes some of the world’s most experienced and respected hi-fi journalists with a vast wealth of knowledge. Some have edited popular English language hi-fi magazines, and others have been senior contributors to famous audio journals stretching back to the late 1970s. And we also employ professional IT and home theatre specialists who work at the cutting edge of today’s technology.

We believe that no other online hi-fi and home cinema resource offers such expert knowledge, so when StereoNET gives an Applause Award, it is a trustworthy hallmark of quality. Receiving such an award is the prerequisite to becoming eligible for our annual Product of the Year awards, awarded only to the finest designs in their respective categories. Buyers of hi-fi, home cinema, and headphones can be sure that a StereoNET Applause Award winner is worthy of your most serious attention.
