New Samsung 8K QLED TVs On Sale Now

The bigger the TV screen, the more resolution you need for a sharp picture. That's now easier to find with six new Samsung large screen, 8K TVs hitting stores today.

They are big TVs with big specifications and big prices to match. All use Samsung's QLED technology. That uses quantum dots to generate precise wavelengths of visible light, increasing colour accuracy and efficiency.

Since there's almost no native 8K content available right now, the main benefit of 8K TVs is in providing smoother on-screen results with existing FullHD and UltraHD content. To upscale, the TVs incorporate Samsung's “AI-enabled Quantum Processor 8K”. Samsung says that this has “deep-learning capabilities” which allow it to “detect, transform and deliver content through an incredibly sophisticated AI system”.

The TV supports the AV1 video codec, a new system used by YouTube to stream 8K content. The TV also supports 8K video captured on the new Samsung Galaxy S20 phone range. Samsung also says that the TV's “Adaptive Picture” technology automatically optimises picture settings for both the content being shown and the viewing conditions.

Naturally, the TVs are also optimised to work well with Samsung's HQ-Q800T soundbar. It seems that the TV's own speakers can be used in conjunction with the soundbar to “create a more dynamic soundscape”.

There are two ranges being launched. The top of the line series is the Q950T range. Hass Mahdi, Director of AV, Samsung Electronics Australia, said:

Q950T QLED 8K is the marquee television in Samsung's 2020 range and is the ultimate in our big-screen innovation and design. It delivers content that seems breathtakingly real. It feels like you could step right into it. This picture quality is impeccable and is presented in a stunning and sleek design.

One thing marking out the Q950T is its “Infinity Screen”. The picture is “etched right to the edge, offering a nearly 99 per cent pure screen to body ratio.”

Samsung's latest TV release comes in three sizes: 65 inches ($9,999), 75 inches ($13,499) and 85 inches ($21,999). If those prices are a little too challenging, the less head-turning Q880T range also has three models: 65 inches ($6,399), 75 inches ($8,699) and 82 inches ($11,649).
