IS LG SUGGESTING ITS TVS ARE THE ONLY ‘REAL 8K’ ON THE MARKET?

LG Electronics dropped a press release overnight boasting its SM99, and 88ZN TVs are 'Real 8K', perhaps implying its rivals are not?

LG's 75SM99 NanoCell LED/LCD and 88Z9 may have arrived a little late to the 8K party, but LG senior execs say the wait was worth it.

LG states their 8K televisions have the distinction of surpassing the resolution measurement criteria outlined in the Information Display Measurements Standard (IDMS), established by the International Committee for Display Metrology (ICDM).

According to LG, the IDMS stipulates that a display must not only meet the required number of pixels for the stated resolution but that those pixels must be distinguishable from one another. The ICDM uses Contrast Modulation (CM) as a means of determining how distinguishable neighbouring pixels are from each other.

For a TV to deliver the resolution as indicated by its pixel count, the CM value must exceed a 25% threshold for images and 50% for text. LG points out that TV with a lower CM value do not deliver real 8K, even though it may claim a 7,680 x 4,320-pixel count.

LG further states:

Tests performed in accordance with these industry standards resulted in both the LG SIGNATURE OLED 8K TV and LG NanoCell 8K achieving CM values in the 90 percent range guaranteeing that viewers will be able to actually experience all of the additional detail in the 8K content when viewed on their LG 8K television.

Angus Jones, General Manager of Marketing at LG Electronics Australia, said:

At LG, we're proud to offer Australians two 8K TV models that meet the IDMS Standard for 8K resolution displays. These TVs deliver what consumers would expect out of an 8K TV.

LG's 2019 NanoCell 75-inch 8K 75SM9900PTA is now available from select stores for $11.849 RRP. StereoNET had our first look recently at a Sydney event.

One thing's for sure; we know this isn't going to be the last we hear on the matter, and we can't help but be reminded of the whole True 4K / ProUHD / Native 4K etc. saga that has ensued since 4K's arrival with projectors.
