FOXTEL TO LAUNCH 4K CONTENT AND DEDICATED CHANNEL
Foxtel is banking on 4K resolution to win back customers who have been enjoying the array of other subscription-based TV platforms now available.
Foxtel's new iQ4 announced this week is 4K ready and from October 2018 will offer Australia's first and only 24/7 4K channel, residing at channel 444.
Cricket fans are in for a treat in November when Foxtel 4K will air the Australia v South Africa match in 4K. Foxtel is also boasting movies, concerts, documentaries and more, in addition to sports.
Other iQ4 features include Team Link, allowing you to series link your favourite sporting teams, Sports Menu which makes suggestions based on your favourite sports, three times the recording space of iQ2, and the ability to record up to 3 shows at once while watching a 4th show live.
Foxtel 4K will only be delivered via Satellite, but not all broadcasts will be native 4K. Foxtel says it will broadcast its live events via a mixture of native 4K and up-scaled, or “up-res”, formats.
Assuming there's already a Satellite installation at your premises, the iQ4 box will cost $125, plus a monthly subscription. Plans including channel 444 have not yet been announced.
Foxtel CEO, Patrick Delany, said:
Innovation is in Foxtel’s DNA and we have continuously redefined entertainment for Australia putting us at the centre of connecting subscribers with the sports and the shows they love,
Today’s news is just the first step into a 4K future – this incredible experience will continue to expand as we bring even more sport and entertainment programming to life in guaranteed 4K, making the most of today’s ultra-modern 4K TVs.
Assuming Foxtel gets the pricing and content right, viewers who have headed over to Netflix or Stan for their 4K fix might just give Foxtel another go.
