AVID HiFi Ingenium Turntable

Avid HiFi know a thing or two about turntables, and while we're in the midst of the 'vinyl revival', there are alternatives to the mainstay brands in the analog world. The Ingenium is one such offering, the entry level turntable from this U.K manufacturer.

We say 'entry level' only in reference to their complete AVID Hi-Fi turntable range, as the Ingenium is by no means an entry level turntable. Those delving into their first record spinner ought to look past the sub-thousand dollar mark and aim a little higher. Generally this will be cheaper in the long run.

Avid HiFi were asked by dealers worldwide to design a more affordable turntable not made of inexpensive rectangular plastic or wooden 'turntables', of which plenty seem to dominate the entry pricing point for turntables.

Instead, AVID's answer in the Ingenium, sharing the design philosophy of their more expensive designs, with true engineered audiophile quality, utilising key elements of the up-spec Diva II. The Ingenium has an exposed minimal design that achieves new standards of style and excellence.

Avid's unique sapphire bearing and platter from the Diva II has been retained, with the once optioned but now standard unique clamping system, which efficiently channels unwanted vibrations away from both the record and platter. The main chassis to which the bearing and arm are rigidly coupled is machined from two and a half inch solid aluminium and allows the use of different arm fitting options.

The Ingenium is compatible with all popular tonearm configuration including Rega, Pro-Ject and SME.

The Ingenium is a good investment that will last for many years to come, allowing the upgrading of arms and cartridges as desired.

Con Dikeos, Managing Director of Australian Distributor, National Audio Group told StereoNET:

The Ingenium is the perfect solution for a high quality first turntable. Among many other design features, it employs the same optimised elastomer used in the higher spec'd Diva II giving excellent mechanical isolation of the playing surface, resulting in better information retrieval and resolution.

Using a mains powered version of the powerful motor employed in the Diva II and encapsulated within a bespoke housing to eliminate motor vibration entering the turntable, the resulting stability and the huge dynamic sound is instantly recognisable as Avid.

Ingenium offers more people the chance of opening a window to quality audiophile vinyl reproduction, with the opportunity to use today's wide variety of available pick up arms, without feeling its “just another turntable”.

It's reassuringly an Avid turntable through and through.

    applause awards

Each time StereoNET reviews a product, it is considered for an Applause Award. Winning one marks it out as a design of great quality and distinction – a special product in its class, on the grounds of either performance, value for money, or usually both.

Applause Awards are personally issued by StereoNET’s global Editor-in-Chief, David Price – who has over three decades of experience reviewing hi-fi products at the highest level – after consulting with our senior editorial team. They are not automatically given with all reviews, nor can manufacturers purchase them.

The StereoNET editorial team includes some of the world’s most experienced and respected hi-fi journalists with a vast wealth of knowledge. Some have edited popular English language hi-fi magazines, and others have been senior contributors to famous audio journals stretching back to the late 1970s. And we also employ professional IT and home theatre specialists who work at the cutting edge of today’s technology.

We believe that no other online hi-fi and home cinema resource offers such expert knowledge, so when StereoNET gives an Applause Award, it is a trustworthy hallmark of quality. Receiving such an award is the prerequisite to becoming eligible for our annual Product of the Year awards, awarded only to the finest designs in their respective categories. Buyers of hi-fi, home cinema, and headphones can be sure that a StereoNET Applause Award winner is worthy of your most serious attention.
