Guest atilsley
The JBL 4355 is the most famous monitor and the largest. They command a lot of money, even after 20 years. Having built many speakers, I'm sorely tempted to build a large monitor featuring all new professional components, including a large format mid horn and dual 15 inch woofers. For fun, I drew up the attached sketch. What do people think? Andrew.
Happy
There was a time when I drooled over the classic blue baffles. Not so much now that I've seen other prettier horn speakers you've built and shown elsewhere.

Guest atilsley
OK, I'll change the blue. I've been taken by some of the world's leading studio monitors...particularly horn loaded ones like Augsperger and Ocean Way Audio. The vintage Westlake gear also looks fantastic. It might be the bass, mid bass and tweeter are all housed in the one unit, then a nice wood mid horn is perched on top. If the wood work was matching, then I think that would look cool. Some pics for interest.

Guest atilsley
Nice Lowly Technics. With me already having single 15's, I think I'd like to go dual. What the hell...
Newman
Well it won't be a 4355 in any way, so what is attracting you to a 'not-4355'?
Cloth Ears
If you're going to build a 'not' speaker, why not a copy of the Model 808 studio monitor. Comes with its own warnings...
Guest atilsley
Newman Two reasons. 1. There's a certain appeal about the 'compact' configuration of having a powerful 4 way housed in one cabinet, with high efficiency and huge output. 2. I have access to great components...so it would be a similar design...not a replica. I understand that enthusiasts would want either the original, or a replica with genuine JBL gear...I'm not interested in building a product with second hand gear. In summary, it's an appeal to retro, with the focus on world class new professional components, crossovers and electronic testing. Thanks Cloth Ears, that's funny. Most of my speakers should have that warning attached...! Henry popped over the other day and asked if I minded if he turned up my two way system to 'loud.' Boy oh boy, 60 watts Class AB into a 100dB system...nooooice.

Those 808 speakers were the bottom trawl for B&W . No redeeming feature what so ever.

Guest guru
If you wanted the earliest memories of home theatre demonstrations to re-enter long dormant brain cells with all its explosions and Star Wars cgi zipping flying through forests evading storm troopers then these would be perfect. See , I was slightly incorrect in their redeeming features, I proffer my apologies for offending your anchors.

Guest atilsley
If I use large bi radial horn at 500hz, the. I don't need smaller mid bass. I end up with these pics....even funnier.

Guest atilsley
I have a few candidates for parts to create a wicked 3 way Monitor. Bass: Faital Pro HP1030 15-inch (x2), 96dB, Fs 38Hz, Xmax 12.45mm. Mid Horn: Autotech Biradial, 2-inch throat, can use from 350Hz. Size 758mm wide x 408mm tall x 489mm deep. Can be flush mounted, hence this choice. Alternate is SEOS 24 or 30. (If SEOS, then I could use one large format and matching smaller format SEOS horn for tweeter. Consistent looks.) Tweeter: Can be a choice of modern slot style or small tractrix, eg Autotech 600 model, with 200mm diameter, 1-inch throat, 900 min xover freq. Targeted xover points: 500Hz / 5,000Hz, optional powered bass using MiniDSP EQ plus amps.
