The Pioneer parlour

Recommended Posts

Its not much compared to other systems here, but it's taken me years to collect all the parts and get them fully functional.

Still got other components out on repair, but I got sick of the huge server rack that I had and finally got around to mounting the stuff in an original Pioneer rack.

I still need another Pioneer rack if anyone knows of one....(also looking for Unicorn turds too, lol)

Anyway, I'm much happier with the way it looks now, almost lounge room worthy (swmbo might does say different)

I'm hoping to get my Spec 4 back soon and although it will be as original as Grand dad's axe, once it arrives I'm planning to swap the SA-9500II out with it, then I can truly call it a Spec rack.

The TX-9500II tuner needs a lamp and although its regarded highly in the Pioneer circles, its not as good as the tuner in the SX-1980.

My plan is to procure another JA-2RS rack, mount the RT-909 and some signal processors in it and the SX-1980 will sit on top. I'm working on a way to include my PD-F1007 CD player and Consonance DAC as they are black. Gotta find a new place for my bookshelf's, as all of this is in my man cave/office in my shed.

Once the Troel DTQWT's open up a bit, they will probably take place in this system, the HPM-100's will go inside, and the Gale 401a's might find a new home. Not sure about that yet. The Gales and the HPM-900's sound very similar, so it might be a coin flip.

Very cool collection Darth Shopping Maul :thumb:

I particularly like R2R. What model is it and how many tapes do you have?

Hmm, Darth shopping maul, thats got a ring to it :D

Its a Pioneer RT-909. I have about 20 tapes but they are all 7" reels, mostly 60's and 70's stuff. Got a few more 3.5" reels that are very old, and a few 10" that I've recorded on.

One of the 3.5" has a Martin Luther King speech recorded on it, but its not the "I have a dream" speech.

Beautiful stuff! I doubt that there would be very many Pioneer collections like that in Australia.

Its funny how it rolls.

I cracked it on the weekend after looking for a second Pioneer rack for some time with no success and mounted what I could in the rack I had. Poked the rest in the old stand.

Low and behold, a rack came up on U.S. ebay yesterday. Some too-ing and fro-ing with the seller and its now mine. Woo Hoo!

So now just have to wait for a delivery from the postie.

Bullshitt!

You were right  ;)

Not happy with how this bit looks. There is a 4 rack unit opening awaiting the return of a Spec 4 power amp.

Theres some serious electric spaghetti going on behind all this, lol.

I finally got all manned up, put some concrete in my coffee and took on the tonearm of the PL-30LII.

I gotta admit, I was a bit scared that I'd do the wrong thing as theres no real clear instructions in english on how this is done. But when I put on the thinking cap and looked it it, it wasnt scary at all.

This is not the 5 stage damping the PL-50 and above have, its either on or off. The big giveaway for me was when I fond a document that discussed the 45 degree bevel on the damping element. Until then I had trouble understanding where to put the silicone oil. After that it all seemed so simple I was embarrassed to admit to myself why I hadn't worked it out earlier

I used 50K weight oil sourced from a hobby shop for use in RC cars. I believe the correct weight is 30K, but that was as close as I could get

After a few days of listening, the results are great. I've noticed there is some detriment to some frequencies, but the overall result is very pleasing. More presence, more depth, but a loss of some simblance. Found that some tone adjustment seems to pick the simblance back up. I dont like adding tone control into the path, but if it does the trick then so be it.

Had a change of speakers.

Got some Troels Graverson DTQWT's  in the parlour. Had mixed results at first, but after some swapping and changing some amps, results are getting better. My little Pioneer SA-9500II seemed to do the best job. My SX-1980 did sound good pumped up as its not fantastic at low levels at the best of times.

The Troels sound pretty bloody good.

While in a swapping mood, thought I'd dust off an old Pioneer SM-G204B valve amp

post-131641-0-16111100-1464353926_thumb.

Although the valve receiver does have a nicer, easier sound, its dynamics are limited.

The journey continues....
