The church's new layout

Recommended Posts

Ha unfortunately no Nihilo mono's in my future. Instead i'll be using the Holton NXA800 modules in a slightly different arrangement than specified (or as others have built previously)in that instead of running 92v rails for 500w/8 im dropping them down to only 80v so my rating will only be in the high 300w low 400w range however in doing so it gives me more low impedance drive capability which is what I need for the dunnies.

Also going a bit old school on the power supply and instead of using big new shiny toroids i'll be using some big old iron transformers pilfered from some of my Ashly amps. Call me superstitious but i take comfort in the fact that some DNA from live gigs/studio sessions these Ashly's have seen in there near 30 year career carries over to these new amps.

Not 100% locked down on filtration but at this stage im working with 2 individual rectifier/filter banks each utilising 4x30A high speed Schottky diodes and 8x 8,200uf (131,200uf total capacitance) in a completely dual mono design.

All to be squeezed into one of these

Working on the layout with a 1:1 floor plan (using my job seeker application form it seems 😆) with the two transformers placed in the front, the 2 filter banks behinf & the amp modules bolted to the sides of each heatsink.

Thanks, I quite like it too, not too plain and not too flashy either.

A. I don't do gold

B. Did you see the size of it? more like a headphone amp than one for a main system.

Some Holton goodies also arrived

This is the new revision (R5) released March this year and features Vishay MELF resistors & additional RC filtering on the input driver stages and improved output stage stabilization.

Wow, using a sub with the Sovereigns? That's crazy but I could imagine the benefits. I have a 15" weapon in my dishwasher cavity in the kitchen, maybe I should roll her down and see how it goes.

Are you blending it in "naturally" or are you going to implement a HPF for the Sov's?

The sub is not intended for lower or more bass as the Sov's are somewhat sufficient in that regard. It's more to do with evening the bass out in the room a bit better so that im not in a peak or null. for example the spot where I get the smoothest mid-low bass means sacrificing some of the very lowest octave (20hz -30hz) so am hoping the REL can be placed in a position where its able to fill that in a bit.

Also if you drink the REL kool aid they claim there subs are not about bass but instead are about increasing the soundstage and improving midrange clarity.

Consider putting it someone else than next to your mains then.
I suggest trying behind you (for the reason stated above) and closer than your mains as most if not all of those wireless transmission systems add delay (15 to 50ms is typical).

Note the group delay mentioned in the literature ...

Beyond our proprietary drivers, the performance of a REL is determined by our unique input filters and amplifiers. 212/SE uses a simple filter-type that is very fast—about 8 milliseconds in group delay– to cross out unwanted higher frequencies to our driver.

... seemingly only refers to just what is caused by the crossover\filter.

There will be extra delay added by the wireless transmission system which seems to be unspecified.

My cat LOVES her arse being scratched (well, the base of her tail, thankfully on her back) - pushes up with her back legs like she’s trying to deadlift!

Been playing around with sub positions today which is not easy to do with this REL but this position is promising (rear left hand corner)
