Secondly, before disassembling anything (other than to remove the headshell clips from the cartridge) - use a multimeter to check continuity of each of the wires from the headshell clips to the RCA plugs. Thanks ophool, will investigate this as well. Appreciate the advice. Its killing me not having this working properly hahah

okitoki
The lift is there.... just not moving up or down. . There seems to be tension on the lift lever so it's not broken ....

Not changing arm yet It is a little time since a last looked but is quite a bit on YouTube, especially a chappie called viperfrank. Lots of practical help there and maybe something directly on the arm-lift. It is possible to manage without an arm-lift and there are one or two tonearms that don't have them - you just have to be careful.
okitoki
Well... looks like the fella I bought from didn't know what he was selling or he forgot... Looks like the tonearm lift was screwed all the way down so wasn't moving up or down at all with arm lift up or down... maybe as a DJ they don't need it.... A quick unscrew and it pop right up... a few push down and pull up... loosen up the grease and now working fine... easy fix Seems like the earth was mod to the RCA cable... no hum... good sign Also trying out a Shure V15 type 3... bought in unknown condition and just fitted a Jico stylus. Tracking at 1.25g... so far sounds pretty good while breaking in. Have to admit it is very quiet deck. Start stop platter is pretty much instant... no need to wait for the platter to stop spinning steady speed too... Much better than my previous 1300 Edited March 4, 2017 by okitoki

okitoki
Ok, tried different cart on my 1210 and has been great... but now I'm testing a Ortofon Rondo Red, and found when I switch on the MC option for my Vincent Pho8, there is a slight hum appearing. So far I have Isolated it is coming from the Turntable (Pho8 is dead silent without 1210 RCA connected) The 1210 has been moded to remove the Earth wire by the previous owner. Best way to approach this without going to extreme of replacing the RCA cable? thanks
EV Cali
Removing or replacing the earth appears to be a common thing. With the SL still being so popular and in demand lot's of information out there. http://www.djresource.eu/Topics/story/110/Technics-SL-Replacing-Signal-and-Ground-Wire/ This one is quite good to http://markyg.me/2014/03/replacing-rca-cables-and-self-grounding-technics-1200-turntables/ Or you could do this ,if your soldering is not up to much. http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Technics-SL-1200-1210-NO-SOLDER-Audio-RCA-Cable-Tonearm-PCB-ProteX-Black-1-2m-/252727483268?hash=item3ad7bb5b84:g:RYQAAOSwk5FUztBA Edited March 22, 2017 by EV Cali

As it happens I am toying with the idea of getting an Origin Live Illustrious for my 1210Mk5! I've gone a bit mad on my TT and done platter, bearing, power supply upgrades. Basically every upgrade possible short of replacing caps on the motherboard. I have a Jelco 750D tonearm that I have tweaked as well. But OL certainly talk the talk, and maybe they also walk the walk. How have you found the Encounter? and have you tried other arms? Also that slab underneath, is that granite? I see that you appear to have screwed in an aluminium strip to give the whole shebang some spikes. If it is granite you must have a pretty good drill! ray4410
hi Andrei, with what you have already done to your technics and then add the origin live you would have a killer turntable,i myself loved the origin live arm especially with the dynavector 17d111,the arm is really nice to use,the base you mentioned is 19mm compressed cement sheet covered with felt then four focal pods with 9mm ply board that the table sits on and yes the base has four adjustable spikes for leveling,as you can see from the picture the table is pretty close to the speakers but I could go silly now and then with the volume whith no feedback at all, good luck with your next upgrade you won't regret it;
okitoki
alright... did further trouble shooting with the hum last night before I take it apart for rewiring this weekend.... - Isolated it is definately turntable causing hum by unplugging 1210 RCA from phono - confirmed hum stops when headshell is removed - confirmed it is not headshell/cartridge related as I have tried another headshell with a different cart and the hum is still there... Next step? annoying, because there is nothing in MM, but MC just hums along... Edited March 23, 2017 by okitoki

Next step? annoying, because there is nothing in MM, but MC just hums along... Just in case it helps with your process of elimination. I had a similar hum issue when I installed an AT150mlx on my SL1200. The metal body of the AT150 cartridge allowed a circuit between the tonearm ground wire to the cartridge body to the tonearm. Via contact between cartridge to headshell or cartridge mounting bolt to headshell. Result was hum as you described, which went away when the headshell was removed. I had only used plastic encased/insulated carts on that headshell before, without issue. There were 2 possible solutions, remove a tab on the AT150 that grounded the cart body to the pin, or just insulate the cart from the head (including the mounting bolts which is the difficult part, nylon bolts recommended). Luckily I had another Technics headshell of a different design which has a plastic mount that insulted the cart. Problem sorted. My other metal bodied cart, a Shure M97xE, had only been used on this insulated headshell, so was never a problem. Grounded headshell caused hum with AT150. Insulated and solved hum issue. Hergest
Nope. The last thing I read was at the start of 2015 and I quote..... Several Australian specialist sound distributors are chasing the rights to Panasonics iconic Technics audio brand after the launch at CES of an expanded range of systems. - See more at: http://www.smarthouse.com.au/news/57H37TAZ-iconic-panasonic-technics-brand-tipped-to-make-oz-comeback.aspx#sthash.LKQLjtA6.dpuf Clearly they are chasing the rights very slowly but maybe dealing with a huge company to sell their goods is a time consuming business? eltech
Guys... can the 1210mk2 tonearm be installed on a mk1 sl120? Thread below says it drops in with a little filing. But I'm not sure. I have an SME 3009 MK2 on mine.http://audiokarma.org/forums/index.php?threads/just-bought-a-technics-sl-1200-mk1.749236/
okitoki
ah... sound like it is not a direct fit... Saw a Sl120 with the SME plate for sale on Ebay for $300, thought I might be able to get that... swap the SME plate to my Mk2, and MK2 tonearm to the Mk1; and have an extra TT for just $200 extra outlay (taking in consideration of $100+ for a SME mounting plate for the Mk2) Oh well... good thing I double checked before impulsive purchase. Chigurh
How likely would it be that the SL1200GR will be available in Australia? I'm visiting the UK later this and I'm considering picking one up and bringing it back as checked baggage.

metamatics
Just adding to this old thread Got my hands on a brand new sl1210m5g , will be arriving this Wednesday... Previously owning funk firms clearaudio decks this will really become a less battle dealing with finicky set ups as on my last couple of decks ....
SL1200
Well done! I can confirm they are blindingly easy to use. One tip; even though it is new you should lubricate the bearing. I would actually take it out and put a couple of drops of good quality thick engine oil and work it into the shaft / sleeve. Then a single drop onto the thrustpad.
metamatics
Thanks @SL1200 have had a number of technics back in the day for other uses and a 1210m5g I swapped for some focal speakers once upon a time .... just looking to get a KAB fluid damper and some suitable feet for now , and I would say that’s it ... cartridge choice is a 2m bronze pnp maybe a black which will channel through my nighthawk ray Samuels phonostage and sugden amp .....
