Green Wagon
Right, well while I wait for parts for that damn cambridge, lets knock over a few easy (HA) repairs. This is supposed to be a Marantz SD-55 tape deck. Buuuuut it's actually a Teac v750 / 850 / vx / etc... Look for the Teac logos inside New owner wasn't concerned terribly about it, just if I could quickly and easily make it function. Unit would sound like it's spinning up, but nothing would work. Broken belt thinks I. I was right I was, but ohhhhhh I did not expect this mess. Ew. The overall condition of this unit is a credit to it's previous owner. On to the pics............ Oh yay. Never seen a belt this bad before. Seen some gummy, broken, dried out, missing. But never as a string of, well, taffy.... Yeah the capstan belt aint no better. Nothing for it, Pull the mech, strip, clean (and clean, and clean, and clean). No pics, But all cleaned eventually, didn't take many hours. *cough 4 hrs, flux cleaner, half a roll of paper towel, ~50 cotton buds cough*. New belts, in case anyone is wondering the originals are supposed to be 0.6 x 3 x 203 long and 1.3 x 152 long, but I made do with marginally different ones. (0.5 x 3 x 198 and 1.4 x 154) Seems to function perfectly, but I have no tapes to test it with, or the gear needed to accurately set its speed. Ohhhh Shiny
Equaliser
Why do people still own these ancient machines? Nice repair there though.
Green Wagon
Thank you, *bows gracefully* form over function ? I believe this was purchased more as a 'matching' piece to the cd94's (yes, plural) he already has. And lets face it, those side panels are absolutely immaculate. Not a mark on them. All I did was a quick wipe over with window cleaner. We won't go into the bit about no ones made the tape media for decades, so any tapes he finds will be 15+ year old. Although, I have heard that Studer has partnered with a media producer for blank tape for their to be released new, as in brand new reel to reels.................................................. God I do not want to know the price on those decks :o Edited August 26, 2015 by Green Wagon
