Can you locate the 'source' from which re-pressed vinyl is pressed from?

Recommended Posts

Hi,

Recently an SNA member posted or pointed us to this article about vinyl pressing plants & their ability to pump out enough discs because of the renewed demand.

http://www.theguardian.com/music/2015/jan/07/-sp-vinyls-difficult-comeback

This was good reading. One of the takeaways was the comment about how in a "Sunday Session" where Colleen Murphy played two versions of the same Beach Boys 45 (one from the 99 & one from the early 70's) that the original version sounded significantly fuller than the latter. She contributed this to a lot of current remastered vinyl being pressed from an mp3 source.

This has got me thinking. How do you know or how can you find out (other than what the sales websites tell you) what source was used for the current crop of re-pressings?

She mentioned that the Led Zep ones pressed at Optimal Plant were from the tapes, but many others from USA plants in particular were not.

I'm interested to know any sites or data-bases which can tell you this & therefore make the purchasing of new re-pressings more transparent as I for one don't care much for pressings from mp3...

I was reading something on SHTV where the dude from GZ pressing plant mentioned that 99% of their titles are sent to them as digital files. So that's one data point.

edit: as for pressed from mp3, a spectral analysis should show this, if one is available. If not, I'm not sure anyone will admit to it ...

I didn't take that away from the article at all.

The exact quote, referring to one particular California based operation is "I have a feeling they might even master from MP3".

This would seem a strange thing to do, as it would be quicker/easier to work from AIFF/WAV files if choosing to master/press from a digital source.

I remain extremely skeptical - as far as I can tell she has no credentials/experience as a mastering engineer whatsoever and her claim is completely unproven and dubious speculation.

  You guys realise that 'digital files' doesn't mean mp3s, right?

GZ list mp3 (among a number of other 'lossy, compressed audio formats') under the 'Non-recommended and inappropriate formats' section in their Technical Conditions document.

You realize that one question asked by the OP was identifying the source of a pressing, right? Not necessarily from tapes, right? And that I added a caveat about how to identify an MP3 source in additional to possibly identifying digitally sourced pressings, right?

Right? Right.

Led Zep said to come from tapes but then put into and pressed from Hi Res digital.

As far as "...from USA plants in particular were not." I didn't see that in the article.

Yes.   Software analysis can identify the artifacts of lossy compression.

a lot of current remastered vinyl being pressed from an mp3

I am honestly very surprised to hear that anything (aside from a few acutely braindead occurances) are re-released from a lossy source ..... let alone it being common.

Oh, well that makes much more sense  (I didn't read yet) .....    We don't have to "guess" whether lossy compression has been used  (it's easy to identify) .... so anyone making this comment is obviously removed from what is actually happening.

Right...

Apologies for the (my) confusion, I inferred that when you wrote "So that's one data point" that you were giving credence to the (baseless) assertion that the OP was making: that mastering studios are/were pressing from mp3 sources - opposed to digital sources generally.

Which now that I'm 100% sober seems to not be the case.

Item: Sansui SR-212 Vintage 70s Turntable - Japan - Professionally Restored & Upgraded
      Location: Sydney
Price: $450, open to reasonable offers
Item Condition: Very Good, recently serviced/restored/upgraded and working.
Reason for selling: No longer required
Payment Method: Pickup - Cash, Paypal, COD Only
      Extra Info:

I recently inherited this Sansui SR-212 turntable , which is of 1970s vintage and is made in Japan. The turntable employs a unique multiple suspension/insulation system to eliminate howling ( it has a suspended sub-chassis design).

The deck is in really nice condition, no major blemishes to speak of. Even the lid is in good condition, no cracks and the hinges also appear to be working fine.

It did need some minor repair work to get it up and running, so I engaged Chris from Spin Doctor Music here in Sydney to repair/restore the deck for me which he did very well.

In the process the following upgrades were also made to the deck :
Brand new drive belt Brand new Jelco HS-25 cartridge shell was purchased and installed onto the tonearm Brand new Ortofon 2M Silver MM phono cartridge was purchased, installed and aligned Brand new AUS power cord was installed
Initially I thought I might use this Sansui TT in a second system, but It turns out that I won't be making use of it after all.

So , it's up for sale now to someone who can make use of it.

Everything is in good working order, including the arm cueing and auto-return mechanism. Platter speed has been tested by Spin Doctor Music and is accurate and stable at both 33.1/3 and 45 speeds.

Some more info and general specs on this turntable are available here:
      https://www.vinylengine.com/library/sansui/sr-212.shtml

Note of course that this one has the Ortofon 2M Silver cart and Jelco headshell upgrades. The Ortofon 2M Silver seems to sit between the 2M Blue and the 2M Bronze in the Ortofon 2M lineup.  I will also provide the original headshell and also the (probably very worn out) original SC-37 IM cartridge.

I don’t have any boxes or packaging for the deck, so I would prefer local pickup from Sydney.

I've also got the original operation manual for it.

The new Ortofon 2M Silver cartridge and Jelco HS-25 headshell together alone would cost over $400 RRP.

Buyer will need to add their own RCA-RCA phono cable to connect the deck to an amp/phono stage.

Local pickup Sydney only. COD payment is easiest, or happy to receive a bank/BSB or PayPal Friends transfer before pickup.
