The Song Game

Recommended Posts

This is a bloated album, an unexpected loss of form. The lyrics are direct but not with the memorability that directness often confers. Some songs are disastrous overstatements ('Drawing the Line', 'The Incident', 'Your Unpleasant Family'), while others squander their promise ('Time Flies') by refusing to eschew the verse/chorus formula that is the curse of popular music. But there is one triumph: 'Octane Twisted'. It feels like a consolation prize - a cheat - rather than a consolation. Time to regroup.

Clemens non Papa: Missa pro defunctis (Brabant Ensemble )

Back in October Maxgate had a wee rave about this album and last week I finally got around to ordering it from Marbecks. Last night, after a day toiling in the garden, I sat down with a glass of Leffe in hand and let the Brabant Ensemble transport me to a world of bliss. Wonderful!

We live at a time when delight is often constrained by irony, when belief is declared either stridently or apologetically, when 'soul' summons images of velvet caps and flared suits... So to hear the Brabant Ensemble sing 'Heu Mihi, Domine' is to recover delight, dispense with irony, reject stridency, and find confidence in the notion of the soul as essential to being human. Glorious, if illusory.
