The Song Game

Recommended Posts

My last few days:

Ultravox : Brilliant - waiting for this album for 6 months. Not as good as their best, but not bad for a band who have had a 26 year hiatus. Vintage Ultravox sound.

Air - Moon Safari

Alphaville : Salvation

Roxy Music - Avalon

Renaissance: 'Live at Carnegie Hall' (1976)

Thius original New Zealand pressing takes me back to high school. I feel like I'm listening to a hybrid of the New Seekers and Emerson, Lake and Palmer. This is kitsch with Christmas trimmings - but Side 4's single track, 'Ashes Are Burning' still impresses.

Saw the original line-up at my local town Hall. Can't remember exact date but wel before '76. Quite impressed my self and future wife.

Annie Haslam is a fine singer but her vocal model is 'I'd Like To Teach the World To Sing'; the voice is light while the songs, with their extended instrumental sections influenced by the Russian symphonists (a link with ELP), demand darkness, the weight of loss. So I'm impressed without being convinced. Jon Camp is a formidable bass player with an expansive sound that reminds me of Greg Lake, John Wetton and Chris Squire. It's no wonder the band split in two: the frayed seam already shows.

I am not an avid admirer of Glass's music, regarding him as a composer of willed invention rather than felicitous discovery. If 'Dracula' is his nadir then this is his zenith; I forgive him every failure for this brilliant success.

He must of been in one hell of dark place to put this music together (Propheies). Had a listen for the first time on Sunday (youtube clips, some extremely disturbing) and keep finding myself going back to Prophecies.

Not sure if it the low notes from the pipe organ or the chanting , it just works well together. Thanks for the post.
