Well, I’m all configured and paid the deposit.  Car arrives in August.

Need to sort out a home charger (EVSE) now I guess.  Any suggestions from the electrically knowledgeable appreciated.  I don’t want to upset my hifi’s dedicated circuit which runs near the garage.  Imagine impacting on sound quality just to charge some rotten car.

Well done, first step complete.

JetCharge does some work though honestly any competent sparkie can do this. It's not hard.

Can you do single or three phase? Tesla's offering will do 22kVA unit if the latter.

Your sparkie will need to do a standard demand calc to work out whether you've got the reticulation to cope or whether you'll need a mains upgrade. Don't laugh, some people do, and if you want to go nuts and your DNSP will let you affordably it's not a bad reason to reticulate more. You've posted here extensively about range considerations and if so and if you're not three phase you might want to seriously consider as much (or at least get it quoted).

It will need a dedicated circuit by law, which unless it's a short run to a breaker means you're going to see an isolator next to your EVSE, which is correct and safe. Nothing crazy here. Some sparkies get nervous about mains quality going into a car and want to do interesting things (I left site when mine was getting put in for a half hour and found a surge protector installed inline with it - not a bad initiative for another $200 or so) though really, it shouldn't be necessary.

I'd stick to Tesla's wall connector options in any instance. Given the way demand response works in Tesla-land there's no advantage in getting anything else. As a single phase unit it's not any more 'special' than any other - it's 32A, just like my Bosch/Delta unit, and looks pretty. It can be wired for 3 phase operation though, at which point it's very quick. There are other options that do similarly but unless you're into doing some smart home energy management and need to run demand response on the supply side, then there's no advantage getting anything else. Also the Wall Connector really isn't expensive for what it is.

I need DR and will upgrade mine to a Keba unit accordingly.

Ha ha true (on the chopper)

X is about as expensive as you can get, as hilariously unreliable (silly doors) and you'd think the 3 would be a more realistic thing... tax dollars could have bought two performance 3's for the price of one X! Argh!

seems a crazy move !

normally the police are loaned cars... ie for a period but in this case 😮

"Instead Victoria Police bought the vehicle outright. A Model X can cost anywhere between $136,000 and $182,000 depending on specification. That’s between three and four times the cost of the old Holden Commodore and Ford Falcon patrol cars."

What's interesting about that model X police car is they seem to have gotten permission to run their own apps on the Tesla MCU.

Well, the Falcon and Commodores have been replaced, our local Highway patrol is a BMW 5 series. I can't remember the exact price, but they cost the Police well under $100k each, I'm sure that the Tesla was equivalent

The OS is a version of Linux, it wouldn't be difficult to write the app. If you heard Elon's interview on the TRL podcast, he said that he wasn't opposed to apps but the small volume of potential customers made it uneconomic for 3rd party developers. Police Forces are a specialised market, usually develop their own apps anyway

Nothing unusual about that, it's a fairly well-known OS (not invented by Tesla)

Uh yeah I know a thing or two about linux... What I mean is they usually don't allow other apps on there, at least not for regular customers. Obviously that's not the case for the police.

Here's a relatively short video about the car.

I thought Motor Trend were supposed to hate Tesla, yet they pick it over the new BMW 3 series.

Everyone's slowly turning. Here was top gear comparing the M3 to a performance model 3.
