Country music or what young people know as Alternative Country or Alt country

Recommended Posts

God Love Murder Cheating Broken Hearts Death pretty much sums it up for country music's subject matter

So let's get right to the big issue God

And who better than Johnny Cash to start

Were You There

Backed up by the Carter Family singing ethereal vocals behind Johnny's deep voice it's what I call a perfect song and if you don't believe at the start of the song by the time it's over you will be off to the river

Pretty much the point where country mingled with rock for the first time

A Louvin Brothers song sung by long haired dopers

They should sing this in church

If they did sing it in church I'd go

This is the Louvin Brothers

Possibly the greatest duet singers in music country or otherwise

This song is so corny it defies description but includes a spoken speech that makes you want to hide

Then the harmonies cut in and suddenly it's praise The Lord

Could be my favourite song

I am just a pilgrim on this road boys

The great Steve Earl at home with an electric guitar as much as an acoustic but it's all country music

My funeral song

Well you've gotta plan ahead

I expect to touch his Hand boys

I'll put a word in for you if I can boys

And singing backup God's angel Emmylou Harris

This is Nick Lowe a rock n roller of impeccable credentials who in his youth was part of the new wave scene in London and produced the first Elvis Costello record

And later married Carlene Carter the daughter of June Carter Cash

From memory one of the songs on The Rick Rubin records was written by Nick

In his old age his records are acoustic meditations on age and it's many problems among other things and this song is basically where we are all at in relation to the good book

And now for another of Johnny Cash's ex son in laws

Rodney Crowell

An old man's litany of dislikes and the closer to heaven than he's ever been is because of his age

A great American songwriter

A common comment that pops up here and everywhere I go extolling the virtues of country music is

I like Johnny Cash but don't like country music

We'll Johnny Cash is one of the pillars of country music so the idea is really a contradiction in terms and long and many are the ear bashings I've had to deliver on the subject

But it's all good to quote Bob and my son

Hopefully there are other lovers of the music out there in SNA cyber space ready to sing along in type and at least one person ready to listen to what I think is the best writing and singing in music with an immediate emotional connection

In the meantime here's the Weary Boys named I think after a Hank Williams song

The best records of what I think of as the the 2nd wave of country music for want of a better way to differentiate Hank Williams Johnny Cash Merle Haggard Patsy Cline era from today

A huge influence on the Stones at the time they recorded their 4 greatest records Beggars Banquet through to Exile on Main Street

A serious wasted life though

I've just been listening to this one:

Here's a taster:

Along with Buddy Miller, it features Bill Frisell, Marc Ribot, and guests like Patty Griffin, Lee Ann Womack and Emmylou Harris. It comes with a DVD.

Cheers

I love Buddy Miller

Years ago when the Blues Fest was a festival for fanatics and lovers of obscure music Buddy Miller was part of Steve Earls band

Late in the afternoon in tent with only a handful of people buddy Miller did his own set

Kasey Chambers came out and sang back up and Steve made an appearance

Then STEVE Did his own show and KC came out again

Sun going down

In a tent

Perfect music

Hillbilly heaven

In Byron Bay

Here is a cd I can make an unconditional recommendation about

The first in a 3 cd collection of murder ballads put out by American alt country label Bloodshot Records

The band is like a house band of Bloodshot musos with different singers on most songs

The songs go back to the 30's I think and some would be recognisable to elderly chaps as top 40 hits in the 60's

Great song singers and players and sounding very good on a good stereo like mine
