WTB: Pioneer KRP-500M Plasma Monitor

Recommended Posts

We have our last 65" VT at the shop and will probably let it go for about $2800... None of the LED's can come close. The KRP looks to be something special but oh so rare...

I have seen a lot of TV's but none, and I mean none have the black levels or dynamic range that the OLEDs have. To my thinking, this is the panel of the future. The LG OLED simply creams every other panel in the shop for black level and contrast ratio. haven't seen one in real world circumstances so can't speak for it's overall PQ with lower grade sources but, with every manufacturer displaying their sets with their own demo material, I can safely say that LED is a dead duck technology when compared to what the OLED can produce under similar circumstances...

Hope my plasma lasts long enough to allow me to skip the LED dreck altogether..

Cheers

M

am hoping the same M, oh can I please pass the LED (lit) phase :D

and your right OLED sure looks the business, and certainly the future of top end displays...LCD will still flourish have no doubt as the volume seller :)

Yes, I watched the Kuro for two hours and posted while I was still watching it. Easy to convince ones self that you need to go newer and larger, even if you don't need to.

Big first world problem here :D

So you needed that last two hours of viewing to convince you to keep it after owning it for how long??

(Sorry I should have been less intentionally vague ....  but I was trying to not tell people what to think  ;)  )

I have a 508 (G9) and VT20A (G13)

Aside from VT20A having issues with it's dynamic backlight feature, and a little more pixel crawl (when viewed from very close, eg. 20cm) .... I find them both essentially indistinguishable after calibration.    One could expect that the newer models of Panasonic have only improved (maybe?!)

Intersting. I haven't had the pleasure of seeing an OLED tv yet. I'm suprised it has taken this long to get there though with phones having used Active Matrix Organig LED panels for some time now.

Agree with you on LED tv's, the picture is not that great. Very cartoon like and over saturated IMHO. Plasmas are still better.

As far as LG go I still have no confidence in them as for years they would fail just outside of their warranty period, which is why they also flood ebay with faulty/repair ads.

Never ever judge a tv by what you see in store...well the big mass production stores anyway. They all play slow motion content to hide the deficiencies. Not to mention having the contrast and brightness levels at crazy levels.

Any TV you are looking to buy should be viewed and judged at 50-60% contrast/brightness levels to judge its performance. The last thing you want is a TV running near its peak to give you the picture you desire.....Won't last too long understandably and if it does you will be left with a weak picture.

I get all that but the shop floor is a pretty level playing field and within those environmental constraints, the OLED is clearly superior to LED. Plasma, on the shop floor, which is very brightly lit, is third rate. This is unfortunate because in real-world circumstances, it trounces LCD/LED by a wide margin for colour fidelity, movement and contrast. Most people though, are like babies, you just have to wiggle something shiny in front of them and you've got 'em. All most people want is bright and colourful screens so, on the shop floor, everything is jacked up to display aDisneyland image and BANG....they fall for it everytime!

The ZT is more expensive due to the process of bonding the glass and making it airless/gapless. There are only two places in Japan that can facilitate this process apparently. The diffrrence is negligible really and not worth the extra money. Both models are Panasonics flagship plasmas.

Where have you seen these negligible differences - the US, Japan ?   I thought the ZT were not for sale in Australia

Haha is that your comback? Maybe you should go and view your Kuro again in case you have any doubt lingering in the back of your mind....which is quite possible considering it took you those final two hours to decide on keeping it.

And for the record I am an electronic technician still active in the service industry ;)

here we go again, reading whatever you like.  I was always keeping the Kuro, just debating whether to buy another plasma.

but I guess it is black or white for you, unless you read in it a review where it can become your direct experience and give advise as such.

  • 2 weeks later...

Still looking for a KRP-500M. Hopefully, one would turn up in the not too foreseeable future.

Did look into purchasing a Panasonic VT60, unfortunately, that too, looks to be no longer available.

There are plenty of shop demos that you can get a good deal on

from memory looks like on its 7th year. bought it late 2007 or early 2008 - how time flies

I remember being really impressed with the Kuro's in a JB store about November 2007. The opening credits and the chase scene of Casino Royale were fantastic. To this day I regret not buying one.
