One of Bob’s great songs at a time when a lot of people like me thought he’d lost the plot

about death or at least the grim reaper I think

in fact this is a great record

still religous but minus the didactic style of the preceding 3 records

Listening to this with a less prejudiced ears since the release of Trouble No More and comparing some of the religious records from that time with the versions on  Trouble No More

Sounds surprisingly good

But there is no denying the intensity and passion of the live stuff

Or the killer band

Despite Looking not unlike the cat that swallowed a canary a great record cover

and one of his best ever songs

great but ugly not very lovey dovey  shouting version of this with different lyrics on Hard Rain

probably why he was looking for a bit of redemption a few years later

great song off Trouble No More

love the way he sings

dead man dead man

if you like Dylan get into this record

Watching the DVD that comes with the box set

this Guy keeps popping on a regular basis with a sermon

kind Of weird nothing particularly awful and nothing that Dylan hasn’t said one way or another over decades

and  the gospel chorus of 5 black soul singers

pretty spectacular

should be compulsory viewing for professional Christians like Abbott Abetz Bernadi and the genuinely creepy guy that Bernadi just recruited

they might get to understand that what they preach and what the Bible says are 2 different things

hard to recommend for anyone with just a passing interest in Dylan but kind of fascinating for fanatics

and as I said before killer band and great singing

Great great song but had no idea that the interpretation was so complicated

Or that it referred to Ode To Billie Joe

Not sure  if anyone will be as interested as I am but the comments of Billie Gentry in relation to the songs meaning

Could just as easily be applied to the way racism has been legitimised as policy by Howard and his Tampa response and of course Brexit and Trump and the disinterest

in public and private discourse

And the coming backlash to the outrage over cheating in cricket around the view that everyone does it

which I was thinking about at the same time I was reading about this song

It took me many years into my Dylan obsession before I enjoyed this album, but it was sure worth the wait.  "Tell Me That It Isn't True" is one of his unrecognised gems.  2.41 of bliss.  And yes, great cover photo.

My Dylan obsessions currently run as :

1/ John Wesley Harding ( Bob looks out his back door and sees scripture in the odd and prosaic. Bonus, best unrecognised zombie song ever.

2/ Nashville Skyline - (Bob gets a boner for love and life in general.)

3/ Blonde on Blonde - ( Bob gets high, irritable, and has visions deluxe)

4/ Blood on The Tracks - ( Bob gets even)

5/ World Gone Wrong - ( Bob remembers where he came from.)

6/ Oh, Mercy - ( Bob gets produced well)

- others, different tunes for different rooms, but a huge soft spot for the much maligned " Dylan and The Dead".

Billy.

I've always loved the album. Bob's voice was never better imo, probably due to him giving up the fags before it was recorded.

Good article about Nashville Skyline and puts the record in context with both the times and his other records

I saw a you tube video of Robert Forster covering that song recently

After 6 months on and off listening still don’t know where I am with this

sigh

i really don’t like Christianity and a lot of what I don’t like is here but comes complete with some great singing a great band and some sublime songwriting

but and it’s a big but for example

one dreadful song written by Hank Williams(or in this case Hank The Drifter) called Help Me Understand is about divorce and the children not just awful but the hypocrisy is writ large considering the life Dylan was leading at that time

Lyrically maudlin but almost redeemed by the impassioned singing in the chorus

God this is awful and God this is great so to speak all in the same song

At least he’s actually read and studied the Bible and isn’t just looking for quotes to prop up what he is saying

after all that it’s more good than bad and sometime absolutely great

i love this song

covered by hundreds of players

not sure how much interest there is in tracing a songs history but if you like Dylan it is hard to not be interested

the article explains the songs link to Dylan and has a few interviews about the importance of old time music and its influence on him
