I was living in Vancouver in Canada when this was released

Ran away from Australia With a girl

I had an 8track car player with car speakers

I just loved the record

incredible songs and the vocal

had no idea what they were about

In November she decided that I just wasn’t up to her high standards

she was right

unfortunately

i got a crash course in what these songs meant

“like a corkscrew to my heart”

“never gotten used to it”

I’ve just learned to turn it off”

“someday you’ll be in the ditch”

Perfectly normal now

Probably why I love country music

Love Idiot Wind

"And took his wife to Italy
She inherited a million bucks
And when she died it came to me
I can't help it if I'm lucky"

and

"Idiot wind, blowing through the buttons of our coats
Blowing through the letters that we wrote
Idiot wind, blowing through the dust upon our shelves
We’re idiots, babe
It’s a wonder we can even feed ourselves"

Lovely stuff

and...

I can’t feel you anymore, I can’t even touch the books you’ve read
Every time I crawl past your door, I been wishin’ I was somebody else instead
Down the highway, down the tracks, down the road to ecstasy
I followed you beneath the stars, hounded by your memory
And all your ragin’ glory

This is such a good thread!

Anybody have any hints as to where I could get a reasonable quality copy of the DVD of Dylan playing Sydney in '86...."twas his Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers tour.

I was lucky enough to have seen all six Sydney shows and appear to have lost my VHS tape (which matters not as i have no way of viewing that now). Last show was free - Gillian Armstrong apparently directed the concert movie, which I think was decided at very short notice, and apparently just filming concert 5 was risky so needed another night for more footage. ).  Tickets for show 6 were free if you came to the Ticketek outlets dressed as a character from a Bob Dylan song.  I presented myself as Mr Jones (pencil in my hand).

One my fav's, may give it a spin tonight...................Bob is just genius....

Standing on the waters casting your bread
While the eyes of the idol with the iron head are glowing.
Distant ships sailing into the mist,
You were born with a snake in both of your fists while a hurricane was blowing.
Freedom just around the corner for you
But with the truth so far off, what good will it do?

Jokerman dance to the nightingale tune,
Bird fly high by the light of the moon,
Oh, oh, oh, Jokerman.

So swiftly the sun sets in the sky,
You rise up and say goodbye to no one.
Fools rush in where angels fear to tread,
Both of their futures, so full of dread, you don't show one.
Shedding off one more layer of skin,
Keeping one step ahead of the persecutor within.

Jokerman dance to the nightingale tune,
Bird fly high by the light of the moon,
Oh, oh, oh, Jokerman.

You're a man of the mountains, you can walk on the clouds,
Manipulator of crowds, you're a dream twister.
You're going to Sodom and Gomorrah
But what do you care? Ain't nobody there would want to marry your sister.
Friend to the martyr, a friend to the woman of shame,
You look into the fiery furnace, see the rich man without any name.

Jokerman dance to the nightingale tune,
Bird fly high by the light of the moon,
Oh, oh, oh, Jokerman.

Well, the Book of Leviticus and Deuteronomy,
The law of the jungle and the sea are your only teachers.
In the smoke of the twilight on a milk-white steed,
Michelangelo indeed could've carved out your features.
Resting in the fields, far from the turbulent space,
Half asleep near the stars with a small dog licking your face.

Jokerman dance to the nightingale tune,
Bird fly high by the light of the moon,
Oh. oh. oh. Jokerman.

Well, the rifleman's stalking the sick and the lame,
Preacherman seeks the same, who'll get there first is uncertain.
Nightsticks and water cannons, tear gas, padlocks,
Molotov cocktails and rocks behind every curtain,
False-hearted judges dying in the webs that they spin,
Only a matter of time 'til night comes steppin' in.

Jokerman dance to the nightingale tune,
Bird fly high by the light of the moon,
Oh, oh, oh, Jokerman.

It's a shadowy world, skies are slippery gray,
A woman just gave birth to a prince today and dressed him in scarlet.
He'll put the priest in his pocket, put the blade to the heat,
Take the motherless children off the street
And place them at the feet of a harlot.
Oh, Jokerman, you know what he wants,
Oh, Jokerman, you don't show any response.

Jokerman dance to the nightingale tune,
Bird fly high by the light of the moon,
Oh, oh, oh, Jokerman.

Just had a listen to the first Dylan album I bought around 1972 - Greatest Hits Vol II. Its an amazing contemporary portrait of Dylan and there is no other greatest hits album quite like it by anybody.  While I knew his 'hits' I didn't really appreciate him — this is the album which got me obsessed with his work for years after. A brilliant album.

Think I posted  this before awhile ago

great song that goes from unfriendly but calm singing

To an angry faster version redone for Blood On The Tracks

To positively vitriolic live version

Take about half an hour to listen but is a classic case of how how Dylan constantly reinvents some songs with a different vocal or tone or instrumentation different lyrics or emphasis on different words

Original version before it was rerecorded

I understood the Mark Knopfler walk on, but not the Stevie Nicks or Nils Lofgren ones (he was in Aus with The Boss, as he is sometimes known).

Was an amazing year for tours.  Van Morrison. Dylan. Springsteen. Neil Young (Springsteen did walk on and did a 30 min version of Down By The River). Dire Straits. So Straits, Dylan, Bruce, Young were all in country at same time.

Nobody wandered on to Van's stage.

I didn’t know about the guest stars

i saw Van the Man in Brisbane

That was about the time of Common One

He sang Summertime for a long time

its a long song

never said a word to the audience and never came back to Australia

Sadly

didnt realise they were all in the same year

Listened to Street Legal for the first time in years. I always think of it as one of his lesser albums and the start of a creative slide but Señor Tales of Yankee Power really is a minor masterpiece.

Might be off-topic but I really like the Willie Nelson and Calexico cover from the "I'm Not There" fillum especially around the 4 minute mark when the operatic male spanish singer comes in

Nothing is off topic with Dylan

Over the last 50 years Dylan’s music and writing has flowed through American music like a river

Sometimes a flood sometimes a trickle but it is always there

And not to mention the scores of singers that actually adopt his vocal style

Bill Bailey gave him a go last night in Sydney.  Not too bad a take on his intonation.  Hair quite different though.

There is a story about a dinner party at Molly Meldrum's house at that time. Started off with Dire Straits there and ended up including Bob Dylan, Tom Petty & the Heartbreaker and Stevie Nicks all in his living room.

I was hoping to get through a whole week without Bob Dylan

I have so much time to spend over the next month or so listening to More Blood More Tracks I thought I’d get a week off so to speak

Not to be

My favourite Wilco Johnson Album which has a killer version of From A Buick 6 and some great Sir Van covers

But it also has To Ramona on it

And the truth is Wilco can’t sing it because this is not just a beautifully written song but an example of a perfect vocal that draws out the poetry and emotions expressed in the words

So here I am with what I think is the best record ever made waiting on my favourite song of all time Desolation Row

well they’ll Stone you when you’re trying to be so good.......

got to laugh

Even Bob laughs in the first few lines

I would not feel so all alone

everybody must get stoned

And then there is this

Aint it just like the night to play tricks when you’re trying to be so quiet....

the ghost of ‘lectricity howls in the bones of her face

or

oh jewels and binoculars hang from the head of the mule

an image that the Stones replicated on the cover of Get Yer Ya Yas Out

  • 1 month later...

Could be the best record I’ve heard in the last 30 years

Keep coming back to it

great band great singing and sometimes the lyrics are as good as anything he’s written and at others cringeworthy

really need to immerse yourself in it

not for the Fainthearted or casual listen
