Using HDMI receiver with pre-out questions

Recommended Posts

My HTPC has died and I'd like to get something I can use as a hub for my HDMI devices..

I'm considering getting an AV receiver for use at home to take HDMI input from my Raspberry Pi and Ps3 (Blu-Ray Player) and then send video to TV and Audio to my stereo amp.

My main concerns are:

 - Will I be sacrificing much audio quality going with an AVR as a DAC over a standalone DAC?

 - Is there a better product for this?

::edit::

I've continued searching and have realised what I'm after is a pre-processor... Any suggestions for those on a budget?

Fairly sure there is one for sale in the classifieds.

Bit too expensive for me at the moment. Time to save.

Doesn't the NAD only have one HDMI input?

One option is to get the Oppo 105/D. It has IIRC two HDMI inputs and can be a media player as well and the 105 DACs are quite respectable.

So at the end of the day I'm looking at around $1K?

Minimum I would think.

you could pick up a fairly cheap AVR that will do it if your on a budget. But it wont sound the greatest.

M51 has 2 HDMI inputs and 1 output IIRC

I'm now thinking about getting a cheap (<$300 used) AVR just to take HDMI audio and continue to use a USB DAC for music. The HDMI devices are used for movies so I can compromise on sound for them until I can ****** up an M51.

Does anyone have any AVR suggestions? Can I get a line level out to my integrated or is using it as a pre my only option?

take your pick really. your looking at somethign 2nd hand, depending on what your after. ie latest hdmi capability or something older and pretty basic. that said tax time is only really month or so away, why not wait till then and buy once.

Because I have Gear Acquisition Syndrome :D

I have decided to wait though. Picked up some Richter Wizards to play with to satiate my hunger for toys
