Hi

I finally managed to pick up a copy of Art Blakey's 'free for all' - it's everything Jimdgoulding says it is - Blakey in top form pushing the musos along - W. Shorter and F. Hubbard positively sing, and I've never heard Curtis Fuller and Cedar Walton sound this good. The RVG remaster gives excellent SQ. I think you'd be very wary of relaxing on the job with Blakey this much on form pushing you along - I was going to write playing underneath - but that's a most inapt description of what he does! -Thanks Jim icon6.gif.

I also picked up Stephane Grappelli and Yo-Yo Ma's Anything goes recorded in 1989 - nice enough but pretty bland after the Blakey set. The two of them are almost upstaged by Roger Kellaway's piano playing in places - but given SG's age (81) and that Ma's not playing his usual musical genre I guess that's almost to be expected.

Cheers

Hi scuzzi,

I bought this album last week (along with Patricia Barber, 'Verse', strange, - but compelling) and am getting to enjoy it more each play. Trouble is, I love, Joni Mitchells Blue and her wonderful, inimitable voice, so find it hard not to compare, unfavourably. Especially Corrine B R. on the title track, otherwise excellent.

Grimmie, that is understandable. I've not heard much Joni Mitchell and that could have possibly contributed to my instant liking of this recording. Had I already been enamored with Joni, might have been a different story.

I really like Tina Turner's songs on her. Good to see/hear her back..

Currently spinning - Jacintha , Lush Life

I have to say, most Jazz artists/albums take time for me to "bond" to.

But Jacintha is very easy on the ears, and takes no time at all.

Autumn leaves by Jacintha is a great one as well Andrew. I played it a few times last night.

Hi

Been playing the 2 CD compilation of the entire Curtis Counce catalog. An excellent bunch of W Coast musos from the late fifties, with C Counce bass, Carl Perkins (No not the blue suede shoes one!) on piano, Jack Sheldon Tpt, Harold Land on tenor sax and Frank Butler on drums - a really cohesive group - grab this if you see it around.

The original cover of their LP - 'you get more bounce with Curtis Counce' - is worth the price of admission just for the kitsch value - If I knew how I'd post it here for your edification, but maybe you can google it...

Cheers

Am watching/listening to Diana Krall - Live in Paris. This is 1 awesome sounding concert dvd, PQ is excellent too.

Hi

Glad you like it - It's a great DVD - in terms of SQ and PQ it's probably better than Casino Lights and One Night at Blue Note - and nearly there also in jazz musicality!

Cheers

Hi

Been playing:

Full Circle - 2 CD set with Howard alden /Jimmy Bruno gtrs on first CD recorded 1998, celebrating 25 years of Concord Jazz, with Herb Ellis/Joe Pass on 2nd CD recorded 1973 - Concord's first ever release. Nice laid back guitar interplay on both.

Also John Coltrane/Duke Ellington on Impulse - it doesn't get much better than listening to them playing 'In a sentimental mood' at this time of night with a glass of good red - especially Tas Pinot.

Cheers

Esbjörn Svensson Trio - From Gagarin's Point Of View (1999)

Enjoying every album, man am I going to miss Esbjörn. I only hope he's jammin' somewhere, maybe with Buddy Rich on drums and Charles Mingus on bass.
