Jazz: Currently Spinning

Recommended Posts

In the tradition of the other "currently spinning" threads, here's one for us to bang on about our recent jazz listenings.

For me, today I found a motherload of jazz cd's in a local pawnbroker and came away with some nice original versions of Mile Davis Kind of Blue, Dave Brubeck Time Out and Django Reinhardt and Stephan Grappelli Nuage Vol 2.

So what's floating everyone elses jazz boat today?

Great idea 4hs.

I really enjoyed an XRCD recommended by Scuzzii last night.

Eden Atwood - This Is Always

Id never heard of her, but man what a great record.

With the lights down low, and after a hard day's work, I laid back on the lounge and enjoyed some awesome vocals and wonderful laid back jazz.

And my new sub had me hearing for the first time in my system the full tone and volume of a large double bass as it walked the pace.

Can hardly wait for tonight!

Cheers,

Jake

Immortal Jazz Classics - Various Artists LP (RCA/Victor)

Geez, some real oldies on that classics album.

Jake, it has great SQ that one. There is also this one from her which I have on SACD but it can be had on XRCD as well.

She is one of my regular rotations at the moment - I mean in terms of CD of course..

There are 2 other recordings of hers that I've seen on the site but they aren't in XRCD.

Rollings 'round midnight - Sonny Rollins

Real Emotional - Curtis Stingers (Thank you Raptor)

Idle Moments - grant Green

The Toys of Men - Stanley Clarke

Giant Steps- John Coltrane

River -The joni letters - Herbie Hancock

I got the "River " in todays mail so I'm not sure how it is going to be.The

rest are worth checking out.

BTW how does the XRCD sounds compare to CD/ SACD?

Cheers,

The scale is noticable above CD. Nice extension of lower freq's and quite a wide soundstage. SACD might have it covered but I've found some SACDs to be brighter in sound than XRCD. Could be just my selection of SACDs.. (I'm playing Malene Mortensen can only only gasp at the SACD sound - terrific)

I've taken a real liking to XRCD. Catalogue is smaller than SACD though.

Hi Scuzzi,

I almost bought H.H.- 'Joni Letters' the other day but chickened out, like I have with several attempts to buy more traditional jazz artists. So how is it , it got great reviews so when you've given it a spin let us know ASAP

Grimmie

Ooops sorry field I got the wrong quote, never mind, hey Scuzzi - you have to buy Herbie Hancock 'Joni Letters' now so you can review it too.

I've had a female jazz singer morning and I played:

Patricia Barber:- Cafe Blue

HDCD version of a 1994 album. I just looooove the first track and the recording quality is excellent

Ella Fitzgerald & Joe Pass:- Take Love Easy

XRCD so again well recorded, I have a few albums of this pairing and like them all.

Holly Cole:- Temptation

Tom Waits songs, very nice indeed

Melody Gardot:- Worrisome Heart

A new artist worth listening to.

Hi

Had a relaxing day listening to some (Rahsan) Roland Kirk - he's a multi-instrumentalist sometimes playing 3 instruments at once

- I talk with the Spirits CD- on which he only plays flute (Ian Anderson eat your heart out) with pno bass drums accompanying, and

- Volunteered Slavery on vinyl - some over the top flute overblowing (nose flute and ordinary flute at the same time) on 'One Ton', but very beautiful sax and multi instrumental playing on other tracks - I especially like his version of 'I say a little prayer'.

If you haven't heard what he can do (before he died) have a look at youtube - especially the track called 'Three for the festival'.

This afternoon played Hampton Hawes

- All Night session with Jim Hall (2 CDs) and then

- Four with Barney Kessel, Red Mitchell and Shelley Manne.

Followed it all up with Herbie Hancock's The New Standard

Cheers

Hi

Just tried some experiments with female vocalists today – it’s amazing the coincidences, but:

Blossom Dearie phrases just like Stacey Kent

Peggy Lee and Julie London phrase just like Diana Krall

Nina Simone and Carmen McCrae phrase just like Cassandra Wilson

Billy Holiday phrases just like Madeleine Peyroux

and...

Ella Fitzgerald learnt from a host of modern singers icon10.gif

Cheers

I've been swapping over cables tonight. I have hooked up some LAT international SS-1000 speaker cables and the Soundright BF Silver XLRs from Coem.

I also received my latest order from Elusive Discs (another 12 XRCDs) so thought I'd throw on one..

Jacintha - here's to Ben.

The range on this XRCD is something to behold.. She is also a terrific singer. A great voice.

I have been impressed by a few standouts lately and so I'm conscious I keep saying "this is a must". But this XRCD will be on high rotation for my listening pleasure..

I also ordered all of her other titles when I ordered this one.. Some enjoyment coming up.

(Jake - some deep bass on this recording that your 2 subs will enjoy..)
