Is there a cassette tape resurgence?

I still have the Nak 700zxe

I'm still confused what we should be playing when it comes to tape; original commercial recording or copies or our own vinyl ect. Why play a copy (especially of vinyl) when the original will out-play it.

I play some commercial recordings from my youth which I don't have on vinyl, most of my copies are compilation of stuff I recorded for the car.  Its convenient enough if you just want to hear a variety of tunes when working away and not being critical of the sound.

My car, being only 4 years old, can't play tape. No tape player. CDs or USB is the only method. To me a better method anyway.

I mostly play compilation tapes that I've done since 1979. Playing them often takes me back to another time. I still make tapes as i love a good compilation.

When I was younger I used to tape each album as I bought it and only play the tape to save the record getting worn. Glad i did as back then my record player was poor and it would have damaged albums over time, now the albums i bought when young are in perfect condition for the most part as they were hardly played.

Now and then I'll play a commercial recording if i've never got around to buying the album but a lot of pre recorded tapes haven't lasted very well and quality was hit and miss in the first place.

Just did a recording on an TDK SAX 60 on a Nak RX505 and it sounds great. Still have my old cassettes from when I got my first car...might listen to them again and dig out my Sony Walkman....?

So that RX505 is now at my house. Currently listening to a recording I just made of the Bear Family LP reissue of Nobody's Fool by Dan Penn. It sounds bloody good! Thanks Alan. :)

Prior to that I was playing some radio recordings from specialist music shows about 20 years ago - these were done on my mini system back then, and don't sound nearly as good, but the nostalgia rush was intense...

Thought id take a couple of pics of my Cassette Player today. Ive had this Marantz DCC Deck since new and I wasn’t going to spend 13+ $ (Harvey Norman Employee Cost Price) for a tape so I looked at what was different between the Analgue and DCC casettes. I think I firstly made one hole then to my surprise Tricked the damn thing into thinking its DCC Tape! But I don’t think it recorded so I made more glorious holes.! LOL

As you can see this is Pure Hi Fi! Ultra Stablised BASF Chrome tape it may not be anymore but it worked at 10% of the price per tape.  I think it was around 1997 when I sent a tape like this to What HiFi? In England. They Published pics of it numerous times in their Hi Fi Mag :)

DCC!? Seriously!? Where do you get a player and tapes?

A technology I never went into in the mid 90's because it was doomed from the start by the market. Too many competitors I'd say, with DAT and Minidisc. And then MP3 came and ruled them all.

Plus, it was prohibitively expensive.

Cheers,

Alberto

Well I discovered a way to get Tapes, you need top Chromes or Metal tho. You can still buy original Panasonic's at around the price I was paying back then though so that's ok. & I reckon those are absolute top quality stuff that you could probly just slot into analogue cassette case with the aid of a screwdriver. Could be cheaper than a top line Metal tape! What Hi Fi? said the tape didn't work in their Car DCC Deck so I guess using modded tapes has its limitations.

Also 20+ years on degradation occurs to the cassettes no matter how good they are, and you don't get reduced sound like you would with analogue's you just get NO SOUND at all! ?

Its not a door stop yet, it still plays cassettes and can be used as a DAC :D

Cant speak to the fidelity of the 1/4" mono tracks but if something similar to the sabamobile had taken off you could have dubbed your own mixes with a open reel deck  :) We got the 8 track instead for obvious reasons..

A cassette resurgence . Are we really that bored and stupid?
Why not as they are cheaper than the ridiculous cost of vinyl. Cassettes are far less prone to being duds as many 2nd hand vinyl purchases have proven to be. On a decent deck they sound fantastic and surprise many people. I paid 5 dollars each for this lot in mint condition. Collecting, preserving, restoring and listening to old music formats is fun.
I get bored with flacs and streaming as it is all too easy with no challenge for good sound. Many people get disillusioned with vinyl due to its cost so maybe a cassette resurgence is a good thing.
I recently lent my Sony pro walkman to a friends 20 something son, he loved listening to my cassettes and wants to start collecting them. A great way to preserve the format and prevent them becoming landfill. I seem to remember people saying vinyl would become worthless when CD appeared.
Cassettes....better than you remember.e218f4687e1f66a185928ce3779a3cd2.jpg4a819b386628dd920862095e7b034ed4.jpg

Errr well, let's just say that getting good sound from a cassette is a challenge in which I do not care or dare to participate.

I agree that vinyl is expensive but that just makes me more picky and I buy less but get albums I really love and comparing the sound is akin to comparing a cow pat to a Waygu steak.

One should remember that the cassette tape was originally invented for dictaphone typists and there was never any intent to make them for music.

I guess some of us just like the technical challenge of restoring a cassette deck. The format actually became very good with metal tapes, HX pro, DBX and dolby C. I can record a decent Flac onto cassette play it back to a listener and they are unable to pick the difference. Many of these older formats sound very good and offer a fun alternative to streaming, purchasing, sharing or pirating flacs of unknown origin.
All of the old music formats deserve to be preserved and enjoyed. Cassettes are far from dictaphone quality and there is something organic and pleasant about a purely analogue source. Like vinyl to physically own the medium is satisfying. A true measure of a speaker amp combination is if it can sound good when playing back vinyl or cassette in my opinion. Each to their own I guess which makes this hobby so interesting. Whilst I stream tidal and flacs from my NAS, playing vinyl, cassettes or reel to reel offers a refreshing change.451888ca0b08573da706de2413825221.jpg

I'm a couch potato.

I don't want a media to occupy space......

When I get home from a hard days work, I just wanna have a feed,  put my feet up,  flip a few switches turn up the volume and be done!  chose an album or a couple of tracks on a ipad wirless!  What a great era we live in to be able to do that!   I can play that track a billion times and not have to worry about cleaning preparation, wear,  flipping sides to play the rest of the album.

…….and when I use to use them, the vinyl sounded so much better unit that little silver disc showed up!  what a game changer in convenience.  Don't have to have 2 copies in different formats and now all could be stored on a phone!

I'm surprised that there hasn't been a laserdisc revival yet. You get all the hipster cred of retro packaging, all the joy of large physical artwork, all the sonic benefits of digital, and all the cost and inconvenience of vinyl, in one amazing product. Everyone wins!
