I've found the following in the user manual of "Musical Fidelity M6 500i dual mono integrated amplifier":

The preamplifier section features a precision laser-trimmed electronic attenuator. This allows the soundstage to remain rock-steady even as the volume is changed, allowing pinpoint accuracy and precise reconstruction of the original musical experience, at any volume setting. A 7-segment LED display shows the setting down to each individual ½ -dB step of the attenuator.

There are no details as to how exactly this works, but it does seem to be a good feature, a step in the right direction, as a lot of listening is done in low volume at night, at least in my case.

Sounds like marketing hype to me   :)

Resistors of the metal glaze and metal oxide variety have been laser trimmed since the eighties and  the process is widespread in many facets of electronics.

Laser trimmed resistors aren't new. ... The rest is written by marketing dept I expect.

Thanks guys for your expert knowledge on this.

My question then is: Is this technology likely to be effective in doing what MF puts it to, to the extent that we will actually be able to hear a difference? I hope it is not there purely for marketing.

Accurate attenuation for both channels.

The law of diminishing returns pervades all things audio and genuine advances are few .Marketing a product in current times often takes precedence over R&D. It is difficult to put aside outside influences in assessing the quality of individual pieces of equipment and rely on ones own judgement. It takes expertise to be able to discern the pros and cons of items subjectively and even objectively unless there is access to some very specialised test equipment.

would you like "butter" with that :D

"Right. Can I have a small popcorn?" "There is no small. Child-size is small." "What's medium?" "Adult." "Do adults ever order the child-size?" "Not usually." "Okay, give me the adult." "Do you want butter?" "Is it real butter?" "It's butter flavoring." "What is it made of?" "It's yellow." - Elaine and a woman behind the snack counter, in "The Movie" ...Seinfeld ...

Hi

Unsure if i understand the connection between American TV and our product.

In listening sessions prior to coming over to Australia for Xmas, it was quite obvious our LDR preamp was really pushing the resolution capability of a Pioneer PDS507 with LM4562 opamps. the Cd player could provide no more. We stepped this up to a Yamaha CDRHD1500 with Type 1 DBX and it really opened up  Then on Monday with Martin Logans and Quad 909 the result was in front of three people was easily the best, this equipment had ever sounded.   On Tuesday an email from one of our customers in the UK - " Which other preamps have you compared it too, cause it is head and shoulders better than the bottlehead? "

So it is with no doubt at all our Model C2 which uses a further enhancement advised to our customers to trial with model C is a very exciting product indeed.

Cheers /  Chris

talk about popcorn hehe

How is post 7 or anything in this thread prior to your posts related to your product?

Who cares (unless your a competitor)? Any feedback from products is good imo. If they posted links then that's different unless paying for the rights to do so.

I have been trying to read up about this LDR, and here is some useful info I have found:

This does help put the "laser technology" MF uses in its preamp  mentioned in this thread into perspective. I'll keep reading about this.

This is one of the more desirable versions of the legendary Quad 44. More information about which models are best is available online. The serial number of this unit is 'Q 037663'.

A second phono input card is included as an extra when buying this pre amp.

Sometimes there's a bit of an issue with input switching when you first start the unit, but this is a rather minor thing, Please keep in mind that this is a vintage pre-amp that is working normally 95%+ of the time.

I bought this direct from Singapore (Alvin at Vinshine Audio before the Australian distributor was established( to couple with the Terminator DAC. For really obscure reasons that didn't work out, in hindsight I wish it did.  I used it for barely 2 weeks back Dec 18 / Jan 19. It will have the balance of the 3 year warranty.  I believe the current retail is around $2800 so this is near half price for effectively brand new. I have all original packaging and can ship at buyers expense

The EX Series is tuned to reproduce sound quality with balance mid and smooth extension in both ends, high and low extension. True Class-A biased, fully discrete input and output stages are the heart of the EX-P7. Rich in tonal quality, details, and high resolution. Silky smooth volume control thanks to the discrete R2R volume control, of which known for its precise and accurate volume adjustment with precision matched resistors.

Blue Moon award from 6moons  http://6moons.com/audioreviews2/kinki5/1.html
From the review: ... if you run a premium DAC  without volume... then such context calls out the EX-P7 as a spectacularly cost-effective yet premium solution.  One needn't spend glossy front-cover coin to get high performance.
