Amadou Balake: Aminatha Du The

Shades of James Brown?

< Amadou Balaké's name may not ring bells right away, but he is (or should be) more famous . Born in Burkina Faso, or Haute Volta as it was called at the time, he played in Ghana before breaking through in Abidjan, Côte d'Ivoire. In that city of musical crossroads he worked for years with producer Aboudou Lassissi who runned a successful label Sacodis in the late 1970s and early 1980s. For Sacodis, he made several albums, recording songs in various styles, many of them with a strong latin tinge in the Charanga tradition. But he also recorded songs with heavy Malian influence, highlife or afro-funk. >

Amadou Balake: Aminatha Du The

< With some hint of machismo, Aminata, du thé! is one of the most powerful funk numbers to come from 1970’s Africa. A true dynamite song, it leaves no doubt as to where his influences come from. Deep and hypnotic, from his moans and groans introducing the song, Ballaké stood here at his most James Brown-like, an inspiration with whom he was to have a NYC airport encounter in the 1980s. It’s all about sweat, power and sincerity. Ballaké ya Mariama displays Ballaké’s most romantic sides. With obvious afro-latin influences Ballaké sings about the grace of women and the way they move their hips while walking. A true salsero in his own right, Ballaké learnt his afro-cubanisms all across West Africa. It comes as no surprise that he later emerged as a world-class salsero, as one of the main voices within Africando. >

Ali Farka Touré performed ‘Savane’ live at Palais des Beaux-Arts in Brussels in January 2005. The show was among the very last performances of Ali's touring career. Ali was accompanied by ngoni masters Bassekou Kouyate and Mama Sissoko, both of whom featured on the studio album 'Savane'.
