On the wiring harness I think it needs to be connected black to black and yellow to red? Am I reading that right? The red on the harness is for accessories. So this would also need to be connected for the unit to come out of standby.

Seems nothing wrong with your wiring from your description as far as diagram in manual. Possibly just an issue with the HU. I doubt you'd get wiring in factory loom that couldn't handle current under normal conditions. So the size of it shouldn't be an issue. My other concern would be also, if you get HU going again, why the fuse didn't blow before the loom started melting! What rating is it? Has it been replaced before?

Hi there,

There's plenty of good info about 12V boomboxes on the Boominator thread (DIY Audio forums). I ended up building a smaller version called the Qubinator. The photos from my build are here:

I was originally using a Jaycar SLA battery charger, but it went belly up after a year or so. I now use this CTEK XS0.8 charger, which was recommended by several people.

Besides trickle charging it via the battery charger, my Qubinator also runs off solar power. When I'm outside gardening, or when we have guests over, I simply leave it on the lawn in the backyard, hook up the solar panel, and it plays all day long as the panel keeps the battery topped up (BTW, I have a small 2.5Ah SLA battery inside the boombox).

Yes you certainly can use the charger. I used to do this years ago (20yrs!) while tuning my car stereo in the old HK Kingswood...

My nephew has made a similar portable setup to yours but with a separate single 12in sub which runs from a 4ch amp and a decent HU. Power is via an old stepdown transformer and I just tuned it for maximum output for him before it would cut out! It's a great idea for excess car audio equipment and great for the pool parties Haha

Love it.

Wonder if he's still using it.....?
