JCR33's system (previously "Hi there! I am new too")

Hi jack welcome to SNA. That's some pretty amazing kit... you look like you have a nice view out the backyard as well.

I'm curious with regards to your advangardes trios, I am guessing you've probably spent a lot of time listening to their other speaker models as well? Was it a hard decision to choose the trios over their other models.

Do you play around with NOS tubes much?

It kinda goes without saying that if you were generous enough to offer to host a get together you'll probably get half the membership of this board willing to take you up on the offer.

Hi Veefy,

Meeting you guys will be a honour for me. If you guys are in Sydney, feel free to contact me, let me show you around. :D

As I am still trying to organise my house and my listening room is still not 100% audiophile approved. After 4 months, I finally got my kitchen fitted with the right appliances.

As I have a spare double garage, I am planning to convert it into my music room, acoustically treated. A few of my friends have built their rooms and with great result.

I have contacted Andrew Steele, a well known consultant in Queensland, for advice and he has been very helpful. What I need now is an architect or designer who can help me to put this idea on drawing board and a good builder to execute the construction. Finding a builder who understands audiophile will be a challenge.

My wife just let out a few expletives when she saw your pictures - she had never seen a horn speaker before and was politely asking what it was.

I dont think she is keen on me upgrading to those - i may have to get you to help me convince her of the benefits of such beautiful gear.

I have never heard a horn set up but that surely must eba joy to have in your house.

All the best with setting up the listening room - only wish you wher closer to SA so i could race off for the Easter holiday to come and have a listen!!!

Fantastic

You could try David Moseley from Wavetrain Accoustics

He specialises in room accoustics and does installs, design etc

He also lectures for CEDIA on room accoustics.

Hi guys,

Happy Easter!

Again, thank you for all your lovely comments and kind words.

Audio and music has been my passion since I turned 15. For more than 30+ years, it has always been my dreams to have a properly treated room with nice decor.

Occasionally, I find pictures from magazines that come close to my dream room. This is one of them. The colour scheme might not be exact but the idea and ambient will be close enough.

High ceiling is a must, to have 3.5m height minimum will be ideal and plenty of bass-traps above the false ceiling.

L1030615.jpg

Well, this is still a dream and not yet realised. To have a dedicated music room sounds like a good idea but having such room might "distant or disconnect" myself with my family is another issue that many people tend to go against such project.

What is your opinion on a dedicated room as such?

Yes your right about the disconnection, well maybe?.How much does your wife love you

but I'm sure it's the only way to maximise a systems potential, that is having less compremises.

I think the idea of a dedicated room is good although ideally I would want to have some way of bringing natural light into it so you could use it as a general sitting room.

I think you need to find a balance between stark minimalsim and practicality.

Hi guys,

This is exactly my dilemma. Having a treated room is ideal for listening but too closed in. Isolated room is perfect for serious listening but disconnect yourself from reality. What should we do?

Hi Keith,

Thanks for the links, it will take me a week to read through them. :-)

I have actually been to Mike Lavigne's house in Seattle. His room is audiophiles' dream and sounds soooo gooood!!!

This is his "barn" converted "audio heaven".

What a beautiful place to build a home.

Could you elaborate a bit more of your lasting impression after a session at the "audio heaven"?

We have seen pictures of his room and uber systems but a first hand account of the listening experience would be interesting.

I said before. I am just a crazy old fool would do anything for hifi and music.

Apart from spending money on hifi, CD/LPs, moving houses for better room for hifi, another crazy thing I do is travelling to meet other audionuts around the world.

I have known Mike for almost eight years through emails.

After he had his "room" done, I had to pay him a visit. Even though we never met before, he was so generous in picking me up at the airport at 6 am in the morning, arranging the hotel, rent me a car, took a few days off work to show me around. He even drove for 8 hours just to fetch a pre amp to show me the best of his system.

His room, as most of you would know, was designed by Rives and is well documented. Being a novice in room acoustics, I was not sure what I was expecting from the trip. It is rather difficult to describe how good the room was. But one thing that has taught me is that I, for once, had the opportunity of listening to a system in a room that is neutral and "silent". The room was not dead silent, instead, it was quiet, allowing us to hear everything there is in the recording. Nothing there to smear the details, it went high and low as the music required. It was not the effect that impressed me, it was the music, in its whole spectrum, you are hearing a lot more. You don't have to turn the volume up but everything was there.

This experience has permanently changed my perception and perspective about audio and music.

One more thing that I learnt from Mike is that money could buy you all the gears and build the best looking room in the world, but without the real passion for the hobby, the result will not be the same.

I hope you are not sick of seeing my photos, as I have many interesting ones to show you guys. One of them is the President of aca.gr, Christo's home, I went there 2 years ago... :-)

Christos is the one on the left, the lady next to him is Christos' wife and Tony is on the right.

My first experience with Avantgarde Trio, very impressed and ended up buying a pair for myself. :-) Dino and his wife Marie are ever so nice.
