Music Artists Currently Funding

Recommended Posts

Ok peoples. I wanted to start a thread in the same vane of the "Currently Spinning" threads for people to place links to artists who you are funding from the various crowd funding sources around & would like to share to others on here who also might be interested in funding to see these artists projects get up off the ground.

The reason i would like to do this is that I have been to a couple of gigs around town where i have purchased the artists CD at the conclusion of their show and when i have got the CD home and have read the back of the CD i have seen that the CD was produced primarily from Crowd Funding sources. At times i thought wow - had i known i most definitely would have also pitched in to help that artist given how good they are.

I have also funded a few artists recently and thought to share this information to others on here because i think the artist is actually worthy.

Of course whether you fund or not is entirely your choice. But i would like to share information about artists that i am aware of seeking funding and i know i have missed out on helping worthwhile artists that i really like. So this is a good opportunity to be made aware of excellent musicians and also a good opportunity to hear about new emerging independent artists that i might have otherwise missed.

I think if you can place a link in the thread to the relevant crowd funding campaign and perhaps a couple of links to some of their tunes in YouTube etc would be a good starting point.

I am more than happy to kick this off with an artist who i have only recently discovered - Julia Henning (who has reached her target and the official time has closed - but it is still ok to donate). I should also add that your donation is not without reward so that extent it really isn't a donation (unless of course you want it to be). You usually recieve something back for your pledge.

Now here is a woman who is a quintessential soul & funk musician - Jo Jo Smith. Who I see if running her own pozible campaign to raise money for her next album release. She is a great aussie artist who has contributed plenty over the years. An opportunity for me to give to her to realise another album.  :)

I never remember to update this thread as I pozible sponsor a number of artist/causes. Recently O. Sydney and I attended a great gig in Sydney for Packwood (a Melb artist) that I sponsored. He is putting out 4 EPs over the coming year, one for each season. I have also discovered some great music via pozible (eg Holiday's On Ice who are Angie Hart and Dean Manning) that I would not have discovered any other way.

I have been going to Sarah Belkner's (previously known as Miss Little) gigs for a couple of years. A lovely person who has a very distinctive beautiful voice and makes fantastic music. I try not to miss any of her shows as I enjoy them so much. Sarah is raising money for an album and it is nail biting stuff for her at the moment as she is still short of her target with under 40 hours to go.

Check out the attached link http://www.pozible.com/project/174837

Two of my favourite Sarah tracks are on the link, a duet with Abby Dobson doing You Can Close Your Eyes and a previous single called A Place Without Time.

And more of Sarah's music is here https://soundcloud.com/miss-little

If you like the songs then please think about sponsoring Sarah, support great local talent, and get some great new music to listen to.

Hi Guys,

The following I have edited/pasting from an email sent to me recently from "Live at the Village", a local organisation here in the Blue Mountains. I saw pianist and accordion player, Gary Daley's four piece ensemble, Bungarribee play a few weeks ago at the local Presbyterian church hall. Imho, Gary is currently creating some exciting jazz/world/folk inspired music, and is associated with many world class musicians. Live at the Village are chasing approx $8k to top up the funding for recording this suite.

Thanks for reading,

Dave

A recording is being made of "Sanctuary", the first work that Live at the Village commissioned and premiered in November 2011. Please join us...

Sanctuary is an hour long work written by Gary Daley for a nine piece ensemble. Bungarribee is the quartet drawn from the larger group and through which Gary continues to explore his music ideas. Sanctuary is a meditation on family, identity and the power of regeneration. “The inspiration for the music has come from the experience of my mother suffering through the brutal journey of Alzhiemers disease, working to protect and comfort her and creating a sanctuary at her most vulnerable time. Simultaneously I have experienced an overwhelming joy at the birth of my first grandchild.â€

What’s involved in making the album? Hiring the recording studio, a top sound engineer, mixing, mastering, producing the disks, MP3 files, artwork and covers and getting the word around, and, bringing a musician from Perth and one from the Sunshine Coast. The Australia Council has offered a contribution to the recording costs. To meet the shortfall, 80 donations of $100 would work. Many smaller amounts will also help. If you’d like to be a part of the project, as little or as much as can be afforded, will be warmly appreciated.

We will give you a CD (and hours of pleasure) in return

Music samples here:

http://vimeo.com/channels/liveattheviilage

The Sanctuary musicians
In addition to Gary Daley, keys, Paul Cutlan, winds, Oliver Miller, cello, Tunji Beier,
percussion, (Bungarribee), the musicians are Brett Hirst, double bass, Lucky Oceans, pedal
steel guitar, James Daley, mandolin, Jess Green, guitar and vocals, Mirabai Peart, violin.
Individually these musicians have played with the Australian Art Orchestra, Billy Cobham,
Trilok Gurtu, the Sandy Evans Trio, Paul Kelly, Gurrumul Yunupingu, been commissioned by
the Sydney Festival, won two Grammy’s and much more.

What the media said about Sanctuary:
“The audience was transfixed and enveloped by it. The artistic standards achieved... would
have done any international festival proud.†Stephen Crittenden, The Global Mail
“Ocean’s pedal steel guitar was ideal for implying homely refuge.†John Shand SMH

Good to hear she is getting support!

I supported her last album and couldn't be happier with the result!

I wasn't aware of anything recent, until now......! Might just have to make a 'pledge'! :)

I read 'The Finks' are on the bill! Anyone know of this band? I knew someone who was in the Finks a couple of years ago and I've got an 'EP' ! Don't know if it's the same band or not?

Big fan of her last album, In Blood Memory.

She has also done some recent touring with Mia Dyson and Liz Stringer and they produced an ep which you can get here http://store.milkrecords.com.au/album/dyson-stringer-cloher-2013-tour-ep Worth grabbing.

Yes been a fan of Jen's for years. Went and saw her and Courtney Barnett at the Junk Bar in Ashgrove last night. Awesome intimate gig. She is just a superb musician.

Also i should of mentioned another great Australian artist that i have contributed towards her crowd funding campaign. And that is none other than our very own Monique Brumby. Born in Tassie i believe but spends most of her time in Melbourne.

She has played on quite a few of Paul Kelly's albums over the years and indeed i think Paul has even Produced some of her previous albums.

Just looking at the link it looks like the campaign is already over.

Anyhow the other reason for this post is to let you know that for all you Brisbane people Monique is playing at the Dowse Bar in Paddington, QLD tomorrow (27/07) afternoon @4pm. So should be a great gig. Monique doesn't travel up to these parts often - so catch her when you can. I am sure she will have her new crowd sourced album for sale there tomorrow. Come say hi if you do come along - i will be there.

A year and a day since the last post in this thread. I am sure there has been support for artists just that it's not been reported here.

Here is one that will interest those that hang out in the Jazz Currently Spinning. Last September a few SNAers in Sydney went to a JazzGroove event at Foundry616. This particular night was most unusual as 616 was packed. Regulars at the weekly Tuesday night JG often see crowds of 30 or so people supporting local artists. Why the crowd? Scott Tinkler was in town and playing with the Jazzgroove Mothership Orchestra. They were performing for the first time a piece written by Sydney trumpeter Andy Fiddes. It was a pretty special night. For me it was the first time I had seen Scott live. Sensational. The evening was recorded with the aim of releasing a cd. Unfortunately the recording was not up to scratch, so Andy is trying to raise funds to record it in a studio and release a cd. Lots more info here http://www.pozible.com/list/new/10/au/0/0/15 where you can also sponsor the project. Based on the music we heard that night I think there will be a number of SNAers that will enjoy the album when it's released. Here is your chance to grab a copy for $25 (plus plenty of other rewards)and help get the project off the ground.
