I'm at the pointy end of commissioning the first of my completely hand-built 6 Channel SET monoblocs.  I started with a basic circuit and had Lucas of Black Art Audio custom wind all the iron apart from output transformers, and designed the chassis around them.

Here is the first amp undergoing some testing on my electronics bench.  Note the power supply sitting on the floor...it weighs about 100kg and has three umbilical cables up to the amplifier: one for services and startup/shutdown protocol control and indication; one for the ac filaments/heaters; one for high voltage DC.

1269512858_DSETFirstStages1.jpg.bcdbc267cf2f0043fec8acace4728615.jpg

I've really left no stone un-turned when designing and building this amp and at this stage there is not too much that I would change about its layout and operation.  All six channels are driven by 6e5p or 6e6p tubes in triode mode.  Each amplifier is designed and tuned for a specific frequency range and transducer to which it is directly connected.  No passive crossovers...electronic filters are included at the input of each channel.  Power tubes vary according to the intended load: full 6c33c for the bass channel; half 6C33C for mid-bass channel; half 6c33c for upper-bass channel; lower mids uses no power tube and is a single stage stage amp; mid-range can be adjusted for 2.5v and 4v DHT tubes such as 2a3, 45, YO186, RE604, KL71403 et cetera; the HF amp is direct coupled to the transformer integrated in the RAAL ribbon transducer and  again is a single stage triode.

Here it is in full glow late in the afternoon with curtains drawn.  Those two purple gas regulator tubes are for the unusual bias arrangement and enable this amp to be DC coupled.  I've got to find some time to measure and evaluate all the channels, and then finish building the second monobloc.

Sort of.  The photos were taken with all the external panels removed to provide easy access to the internals for testing.  When those panels go on the amp will look more retro-futuristic i.e. vintage styling with slightly modern lines.  I'll add photos when I get to that stage.

New valves for the AM Audio amps arrived yesterday.

Voshkod 6H23P (ECC88) 1973 grey shield and Brimar 6V6. These Russian 6H23p are seriously good and all for $80 😳

Saw some posts on 300B amps earlier in the thread, and decided to take the opportunity to flash mine last night, but didn’t come out that well. ☹️ so decided to post the day time pics.

These are the Audion Silver Night Anniversary PSE 300B 18wpc Mono Blocks that I use in my main listening system to make my QUAD ESL 2057s sing![emoji2]

The output valves are Shuguang 300B -Z black Treasures and driver tubes 6H23N-EB. I have these amps on the side wall and use HerbiesLab titanium C rings on the valves. Improved vibration isolation of the amps also made significant improvement in SQ.

QUAD and SET magic indeed! [emoji15][emoji2]

Really does look good. Tubes and Quads usually don’t go together.

Tubes have been used with ESL 57s from its inception - Quad 11s were used as were Leak Stereo 20s. Push pull designs were the traditional recommendation

There was more debate about the suitability of SET/ PSE amplifiers for the 57s in particular due to impedance related issues.

These Audions are 300B PSE and a conservative 18wpc. They have no problem with the 57s.

John Hall came over just before Xmas, to have a listen and commented that was the best he has heard from 57s. So even SET/PSE valve amplifiers shouldn’t be discounted for Quad ESL 57s.

My newly rebuilt JLTi hybrid amp in a Yaqin MC-100B chassis. Joe Rasmussen's most recent development. The input tubes (12AT7) and driver tubes (6550) have been eliminated (the ones still visible are only for show), replaced by a unique circuit based around transformers and Darlington Pairs of transistors. The KT-120 power tubes have been replaced by a completely new circuit based around "fat bottle" 6CA7 tubes. The switch at the front selects whether the amp operates as a power amp or an integrated. In either mode its performance is astonishing. I cannot recall hearing more lifelike music from a sound system.

Waiting on Herbie's top-of-line Hal-O III tube dampers for the 6CA7 tubes.

ring_halo3_360x.jpg.364790ae6f5e28793f32dba5431444be.jpg

This is what Herbies says about their Hal-O III dampers:

"HAL-O III

  • brings out the best potential in extremely hot-running audio rectifiers, power tubes and other sensitive vacuum tubes
  • subdues heater-generated vibrations and common microphonics, allowing a truer rectified current and truer amplified signal
  • tube output will be more musical, more energetic and less vague while maintaining your system's unique nature and character
  • with spring-tempered titanium C-ring and annealed titanium isolation pads
  • ideal for extremely hot-running tubes - able to handle continuous tube heat in excess of 1000° F (538° C)

DSC02790.thumb.JPG.41d499da0893377266a29a120e349289.JPG

My JLTi-reengineered Eastern Electric MiniMax Vacuum Tube Phono PRE-Amplifier. Joe Rasmussen radically redesigned the circuit

  • removing most caps from the signal path
  • using Jantzen z-Superior bypass caps
  • correcting and splitting the RIAA equalisation between input and output stages
  • adjusting the gain profile of each of the two gain stages, to allow a 12AT7 to replace the 12AX7 in the critical 1st stage, for a dramatic drop in noise and increase in musicality
  • improving the power supply electronics with better caps
  • resolving intermittent hum problems

to morph this quite good MC/MM phono stage into an outstanding one.

The Mullard 6X4 rectifier, Raytheon 12AT7WA amplification-stage-1 tube, and Mullard ECC83 stage-2 tubes, also make a huge difference to the sound of this terrific phono preamp.

Note the Herbie's Tube Dampers on all the tubes. They do a remarkable job of eliminating ringing and microphony, without dulling the sound of the tube. The damper on the 6X4 rectifier tube is designed to dissipate extra heat from tubes such as rectifiers, which get particularly hot.

My recently acquired Chinese G&W T-2.6F tube headphone amp. The stock Electro Harmonix 6922EH are OK, but I rolled Russian 1974 Reflektor 6N23P tubes in their place, and the result is a world better!

My system, including this tube gear, will be profiled and auditioned at Sydney Audio Club's August 18 meeting. Attendees will be provided with exclusive discount codes for Herbies Audiolab dampers, AntiCables cords, and Doge tube amplifiers, direct from their manufacturers.
