Finished off the coffee table that I have been working on today. ?

I used a spare piece of marble tile that I used for the fire place. Laminated it to some form ply. Finished it off with some brass angle and some hair pin legs I spray painted to match.

I think it came up a lot better than I thought it was going to. Even better the missus loves it. The ones she was looking at buying were $1000 plus. Happy days, next is my rack then some shelves and vanity top for the bathroom.

Sneak peek of the rack that I’m building. The timber I pulled out of the roof of an old nursing home. I estimate it’s at least 80 years old.

Ive ripped it down the guts, put it through the thicknesser and biscuited it together.

I think it looks amazing so far. ?

Thanks Tony, I just assumed it was jarrah. Wasn’t till I ripped it down that I thought differently.

They were decent sized ( 250 x 75mm x 4m )and were going to go in the bin so I put them aside. Been sitting in the shed for about 5 years.

Beautiful old timber. It looks like Karri to me but I'm not sure they would have used Karri in building 80 years ago due to the danger of Termite attack. Although being in the ceiling (and the serious chemicals they used then) would have protected it.

@THOMO would know.

As I said now I’m not so sure. It come out of the nursing home on the hill just near Garratt rd bridge in Bayswater.

Looks great, it cost me nothing and saved it from going in the skip.

Should get pretty close to finishing this weekend.

Yes it looks like karri to me.

You would expect it to be karri because karri is structurally stronger than jarrah and was available in longer lengths so was the preferred timber for roof construction.

You need a finish that can be easily recoated because some of the grain fibres will lift and other will sink giving a paint brush like surface which is a bit prone to scuffing.

Ardvos Livos which is an oil based finish with natural resins would be  a good choice. You can get that at Planet Ark in Fremantle or from Neil Erasmus in Pickering Brook.

Just had an update that my new speakers are booked in for a Friday pickup by the courier. So hopefully they will be here at the end of next week. ?

Pretty excited, I wish I could have kept the Soniques and done a side by side comparison but unfortunately couldn’t.

Hopefully I’ve made the right move.

Cheers Dave.

When I swapped out the Sonique’s with the cobbled together Dynaudios ( BM6 with Scanspeak tweeters, the original tweeters were sent over east to fix @unclemack Duntechs.) i knew that they wouldn’t sound as good but it sounded quite bad. Very nasally, thin sounding but also boomy one note bass.

Now I’m not sure if it’s just my ears getting used to them or the new rack or combination of both but today I’m really happy with how it’s sounding. Since getting the rack together I have managed to get most of the cables not touching one another and have been able to a little bit of cheap resonance control under the components. Nothing special, some sorbothane, some rubber footers with metal discs in the and some Herbie rubber squares? I also loosely plugged the ports on the speakers and blended the sub in a little better.

I could very easily live with these speakers now. They seem to be playing most music very well, they are very coherent, image well etc. I think it should be my next project to build some new cabinets and update the crossovers to allow for the Scanspeak tweeters.

In saying that I really can’t wait for the Thiels to get here. ?

Cheers Dave.

That's fabulous news, Dave, I'm so glad that you'll be listening to the Thiels soon.

Cheers,

Nick
