Pops110
We very rarely use the room. It's mainly just for me now we have the other room set up. The heater doesn't really put out any heat up top as long as the fan is on. cheers Dave
Pops110
Been playing around with toe in and positioning this morning. Think I've got them dialled in quite well. Got a bit of Creedance playing and it sounds chooglin good.

Pops110
So, had the day off today. Missus was at work so had a chance to crank some tunes. Things sounded ok but something wasn't right. I posted in @Darren69 thread about bi wiring/jumpers. So I decided to have a look around back of the speakers, sure enough had one speaker out of phase. Doh. Bloody XLO, why they have to use green and purple? They look good but easy to mix up, especially when my jumpers are purple and black. Fixed that up and everything snapped back into place. Happy days. Also decided to have a peek inside at the crossovers, while doing so noticed that every screw on all the drivers were loose. Tightened them up and the difference was quite amazing. They sounded sluggish and less coherent when they were loose, I recommend everyone to give it a go I think you'll be surprised. cheers Dave Edited April 13, 2017 by Pops110
Darren69
Great stuff Davo! Where did you source XLO in Oz??
Pops110
I bought the Ultra's from Frank Prowse Hifi. I'm not sure but I think Xlo may have stopped trading for a while, then started back up again. Not sure if they have an Australian distributor now. They are a nice cable. The Ref's I scored from SNA , most of the others I have I have bought online. Just need to be very careful of fakes. Same goes with Nordost I would think. The price of matching jumpers is crazy. The bananas or spades and the termination is where all the coin goes. $3000 for a st of Valhalla jumpers, OMG.
Pops110
So got my new toy today. Pretty mint condition Meridian 506. Have been keen to give one a try for a while and one popped on gumtree so I grabbed it. Bit stressed getting it sent over from Sydney but it was packed well and it arrived safe and sound. Very happy with the sound so far. Seems to have a lot more gain? So the volume dial is down from where I normally have it. The sound stage is a lot fuller and more forward than what I'm used to. Nice upgrade I think.

Ooogh
Fantastic pick up Pops. The 20 Bit Meridians have always had a reputation as fuller and more "musical" than the 24 Bit players although not as detailed. Swings and roundabouts but easier to live with on the whole. Great build and a real sense of sophistication, lovely thing to own. Their only real sin is they like to cut off the first half a second of songs when individually directly accessed, no idea why. You need a second coffee table to house the remote but you will never loose it ! Enjoy.

Nice upgrade I think. Excellent model - honestly one of the most analog sounding players and worth a few k when released. I find it hard to decide which is better , my 506.20 or 508.24 so alternate. Can't say I've had any problems with cropping a song.Sent from my SM-G900I using Tapatalk
Ooogh
It is just a fraction of a second in my experience. I had two that behaved exactly the same way. It is also only when direct accessing a track, not if you are playing the entire CD. I remember Nik at Audiophile commenting that he had come across it many times when I had my 508.24 in there comparing some amps. I can not remember my friends 506.20 doing it but I was not listening for it so I could not say one way or the other. Regardless they are wonderful machines and were the stuff of dreams when released. Half your luck to have both at your disposal Evil, beautiful, iconic players.
evil c
Their one weakness seems to be with the drawer sticking - the Phillips CDM12 transports are wonderful but I have heard the collet or shaft get bent from forcing it shut. My 506 is very difficult to open and shut but more I use it seems to loosen up but would love to get it fixed. Meridian repairer gave up on being able to rectify. Pops110
Had a fairly decent listen last night. This is a very nice sounding player. It has a very natural sound, everything sounds very lifelike and real. Massive sound stage. I was hoping to get a hold of the 508 so I could use the balanced connections but this came up at a good price so I jumped on it. Everything is working a treat, doesn't seem to have any issues at all. They are known to have the lasers fail, so might look for a cheap replacement to keep for a backup. I love the look of it. Looks great and it feels like a quality unit. Would love to get a hold of a 551 integrated and swap it in every now. Would be a nice simple good sounding system I think. Darren69
Flog it all off and grab the 808 from Sydney hi fi, a CDP/pre/dac and end point for ROON/Tidal. Oh, a detail- you'll need to buy the actives as well but I'll grab them from you.

A mate of mine owns a 506 as well as the pre and a pair of bridged Meridian amps, canna remember the model but malto-grunty. I took the 808 around to his place and he wishes he hadn't heard it.
Pops110
Maybe 557 amps. 1000 watts into 4 ohms. Just ship your 808 over here so I can have a listen.

Pops110
Just got a new toy. But it’s a little bit sick at the moment. Waiting on a check up and some surgery from a very helpful fellow SNA’er. It is basically brand new, the guy bought it to modify. But he got a little bit lost along the way, so it’s sat in a cupboard for a while. Picked it up for bugger all , so should be a bit of fun. The schematic and a list of mods are online so that helps. Hopefully we can get it going again.
Pops110
Another new addition has arrived. Just picked it up this arvo. It’s a little baby compared to the Kenwood, but it’s making some sweet sweet music at the moment. Scored it for a very good price I think, very happy. Hoping to run it with the Mingda if we can get it going again. Should keep the missus happy too. Get rid of the big gear for a while and use the way more compact system from time to time.
