Ok. Sooo there has been a massive shakeup in Pops palace. The Thiels are gone, the Kenwoods are gone and all the Meridian gear is gone.   I really loved the Kenwoods and would really lov

So the new addition to the system has arrived and has settled in well. It has been a bit of a journey lately and have had a lot of help and generosity from members and also @Frank Prowse Hi-Fi. T

A little something turned up today. 😁

Hi Telecine,

I sure did. They haven't come for free to me though, I have had to spend a fair chunk of splish splash to get them up and running at their best again. But it was so worth it, I just love the Gales and the Kenny's are pretty sweet too.

Mario your right about the blanket, a thick doona over the Telly and on the shelf behind the right speaker works a treat. I just don't get to do it to often, to much of the missus crap on the shelf that I have to move.

Hey Linc, yeah got the new dac, man I'm so broke. It works a treat, I love it. Can't really describe what it does but things just seem right now. I think Tuyen might pop round for a listen soon, he can take the Bakoon with him for a listen and your more than welcome to borrow it for a listen after him.

Cheers Dave.

Thanks Pete,

The 6100 is awesome thanks mate. The dac19 is a pretty special piece of kit, it sounds so right. The L1000 cdp is a bit sick at the moment, so can't wait to hear what that sounds like as a transport through the audio gd. I think it will be a far better transport than the Creek. Fun times ahead.

Cheers Dave.

Well haven't had time to update or post my thoughts on my gear for a while.

Picked up a new toy today. Audio gd ref 5, so out goes the dac 19.post-113906-0-12938800-1384421008_thumb.

post-113906-0-79605800-1384421087_thumb.

Pretty bad photos, but you get the gist. The dac is bigger than my amp.

First impressions are good. The bass has been one of the more noticeable things. Seems more pronounced and cleaner. There also seems to be more depth to the music. I seem to be able to hear more and deeper into the music. It's also very musical. So I think it's a worthwhile upgrade. All pretty cliched I know and my ears are probably playing tricks on me. But who cares, I'm happy.

So thanks Braddles sorry for the stuff around yesterday.

The L 1000 cdp and L 1000 tuner are at the doctors still so hoping for a good outcome on that. I think the cdp is going to make a far better transport than the creek, fingers crossed I get them back soon.

I think I can see a good valve pre in my future. I have been using the L 1000 pre into the Bakoon lately. With the Bakoon at full gain and using the L 1000 for volume control and ease of use as I don't have to change ICs around. To my ears it sounds a lot better. So will have to investigate a bit further when funds permit.

Cheers Dave.

A few pics of some other gear ive had and played around with lately.

Nothing special, and most of them were freebies or very cheap., not high end by any means. But fun to have a play around with.

Cheers Dave.

Cheers Linc I appreciate that, but I've sold it already. Didn't have time or space for it.

Gotta catch up soon. I'm keen to hear those horns again. I'll bring the Bakoon over.

Cheers Dave.

Well, I finally got the big girl back yesterday.

She's a big mother, 15kgs and 23 years old now. Picked her up from the Doc and he has given her a clean bill of health. She should have another 20 years left in her.

It just amazes me that a player this old can perform better than my Creek cdp. The Creek is not highend but it's not a cheap player, I think I paid $1300 for it. The L 1000 D performs better as a stand alone player but there is also a noticeable improvement over the Creek as a transport as well. Very happy chappy.

I pick the tuner up next week as well. Have never listened to it before so keen as mustard to have a listen. It will be good to get the complete stack back in action again.post-113906-0-71365100-1392545285_thumb.post-113906-0-11139700-1392545377_thumb.

I've also got one of the Isotek Polaris power board coming as well, so if it performs as others on the Tivoli thread have said I should be in for a real treat. I also got a set of Oyaide xlr interconnects from Pat at War Audio the other day for a really good price. I highly recommend them. Great cables.

Cheers Dave.

I have been after the 5.5s for ages and found some in Melbourne that I was just about to purchase. Then the big brothers, the 6.5s popped up locally. Happy days.

I picked them up today, they are in very good nick. Gave them a oil and a bit of a polish. They look superb.

Very happy with how they sound. They have a lot bigger sound than the Tannoys. Early days yet, still playing around with placement etc but they are an amazing speaker. ;)

Have had to sell off the Tannoys, my Creek cdp and a few other bits and pieces to get them, but couldn't be happier. Don't regret it at all. :D

Not sure I talked her around.

Shes not real happy, :( but I sure am. :D

I think they look quite good in the room. Not too big, I think they are perfect size for the space.

Now to try and get a set of horns in here somehow.

I've got no chance for horns.:(

Pretty happy with these bad boys at the moment. I loved the Tannoys but these fill my room so much better. They imaging really nicely.

Got a rattle somewhere in the room now, got to track it down.

Cheers Dave

What happens when the fire is going? That speaker cable snuck in behind it?

We very rarely use the room. It's mainly just for me now we have the other room set up.

So, had the day off today. Missus was at work so had a chance to crank some tunes.

Things sounded ok but something wasn't right.

I posted in @Darren69 thread about bi wiring/jumpers. So I decided to have a look around back of the speakers, sure enough had one speaker out of phase. Doh.

Bloody XLO, why they have to use green and purple? They look good but easy to mix up, especially when my jumpers are purple and black.

Fixed that up and everything snapped back into place. Happy days.:D

Also decided to have a peek inside at the crossovers, while doing so noticed that every screw on all the drivers were loose. Tightened them up and the difference was quite amazing. They sounded sluggish and less coherent when they were loose, I recommend everyone to give it a go I think you'll be surprised.

cheers Dave

I bought the Ultra's from Frank Prowse Hifi.

I'm not sure but I think Xlo may have stopped trading for a while, then started back up again.

Not sure if they have an Australian distributor now. They are a nice cable.

The Ref's I scored from SNA , most of the others I have I have bought online. Just need to be very careful of fakes.

Same goes with Nordost I would think. The price of matching jumpers is crazy. The bananas or spades and the termination is where all the coin goes.

$3000 for a st of Valhalla jumpers, OMG.

So got my new toy today.:party

Pretty mint condition Meridian 506. Have been keen to give one a try for a while and one popped on gumtree so I grabbed it. Bit stressed getting it sent over from Sydney but it was packed well and it arrived safe and sound.

Very happy with the sound so far. Seems to have a lot more gain? So the volume dial is down from where I normally have it.

The sound stage is a lot fuller and more forward than what I'm used to.

Nice upgrade I think.

Fantastic pick up Pops.  The 20 Bit Meridians have always had a reputation as fuller and more "musical" than the 24 Bit players although not as detailed. Swings and roundabouts but easier to live with on the whole. Great build and a real sense of sophistication, lovely thing to own.

Their only real sin is they like to cut off the first half a second of songs when individually directly accessed, no idea why. You need a second coffee table to house the remote but you will never loose it ! Enjoy.

Excellent model - honestly one of the most analog sounding players and worth a few k when released.
I find it hard to decide which is better , my 506.20 or 508.24 so alternate.
Can't say I've had any problems with cropping a song.

It is just a fraction of a second in my experience.  I had two that behaved exactly the same way. It is also only when direct accessing a track, not if you are playing  the entire CD. I remember Nik at Audiophile commenting that he had come across it many times when I had my 508.24 in there comparing some amps. I can not remember my friends 506.20 doing it but I was not listening for it so I could not say one way or the other.

Regardless they are wonderful machines and were the stuff of dreams when released. Half your luck to have both at your disposal Evil, beautiful, iconic players.

Their one weakness seems to be with the drawer sticking - the Phillips CDM12 transports are wonderful but I have heard the collet or shaft get bent from forcing it shut.

My 506 is very difficult to open and shut but more I use it seems to loosen up but would love to get it fixed.

Meridian repairer gave up on being able to rectify.

Had a fairly decent listen last night. This is a very nice sounding player. It has a very natural sound, everything sounds very lifelike and real. Massive sound stage.

I was hoping to get a hold of the 508 so I could use the balanced connections but this came up at a good price so I jumped on it.

Everything is working a treat, doesn't seem to have any issues at all. They are known to have the lasers fail, so might look for a cheap replacement to keep for a backup.

I love the look of it. Looks great and it feels like a quality unit. Would love to get a hold of a 551 integrated and swap it in every now. Would be a nice simple good sounding system I think.

 Cheers Dave
