Rotel RA-05SE: Thoughts?

Recommended Posts

All,

Anyone out there using the Rotel RA-05SE? I auditioned it last week (it was driving a pair of 685's), and I was mightily impressed with the sound. The local hi-fi store is offering it new in the $549 price range (hopefully I will get them to knock that down a bit). Am keeping my eye on eBay bargains in the meantime but I would like to sort out the new amp before Christmas.

I am taking back in my 686's this weekend to see if they will sound as good, and if they do will be very tempted to buy. Would be interested to hear from anyone who has had it for a while and what their impressions are. Ultimately, I will probably sell the 686s and upgrade them to a bigger speaker. So would also be interested to hear from people using the Rotel with a floorstander setup?

I have a $750 (circa) budget (mentioned in a previous WTB post) for an Amp and CD player. But the CD player is less important now as I will use my MacBook as a music server (with HRT Streamer II DAC), and will prob spend the bulk of the budget on the amp.

Any feedback is welcome.

Cheers,

Neil

I had the remote less RA-04 for about a year when my copland was on the blink. It had no problems driving my Castle Howards or the less efficient Castle Richmonds.

If I was looking for an amp in this price range it would deffo be on or close to the top of my must listen to list.

Hi Wilco - which vintage Brio is it - from what year? And what does "Gone Active" mean...as in active speakers? ;-)

I can't speak for that model however I've just bought an older pre-power combo and love the sound. Came from Cambridge Audio and it's a more detailed sound. That Rega does look good though, I'd really consider if was in the market.

You'll get a new RA-05 for less than the price of that Rega if you go into a store and haggle. Guaranteed.

I have spent a little time with the RA-05 and found it's build quality to be considerably nicer than my old NAD C326, which felt toy like and flimsy in comparison.

I also hear that their gear shacks up with B&W speakers really well, being the same company and all.

However, the Rega and Plinius in the FS section are both mighty tempting. The Rega has that whole 'brit-fi' thing going for it and the Plinius would have a **** ton of power.

The only answer here is to buy all 3 and sell on your least favorites.

If only there was a "really, really, extremely, massively Like" button! Now this is useful advice!

Thanks guys.

Remii - were you referring to the Plessis when you mentioned Plinius? the latter is somewhat out of my budget?

Whoops! Yeah I was. My bad.

I'll second the Plessis S1 as an excellent amplifier. Be sure to demo it though as it does have a significantly different sonic character to the Rotel amps.

Hi Zsonic, does the RA04SE have phono input? I wonder if it will sit well with NAD 545 cdp and Monitor Audio BX2 speakers. Any comments, guys?

You should be able to pick up a RA05SE for around $450 brand new. Try Trevor Lees...

Item: Denon PMA-880R Class A Integrated Amplifier
      Location: Sydney - Epping
      Price: $300
      Item Condition: Excellent
Reason for selling: Accumulated too much hifi gear and about to move to a new house
Payment Method: Pickup - Cash, COD Only
Extra Info: This Denon PMA-880R Optical Class A Integrated Amplifier complete with RC-156 remote control and Operating Instructions is in mint condition. This amplifier was made in Japan in 1993.  Amps made by Denon in this era were considered to be the best amps that Denon ever made. These amps hardly ever come up for sale.

I have owned this amplifier from new and it has been very well looked after. The amplifier and remote control still look brand new and are unmarked. It's whole life has been in a cabinet behind a glass door, which is why it still looks brand new.

This Class A integrated amplifier has a very clean, detailed and powerful output that is impressive for both analogue and digital sources. There are no crackles or hums present and it performs just as well as the day I purchased it.

The PMA-880R has a solid power supply that uses a shielded toroidal transformer, and a pair of large 12,000uF capacitors for voltage smoothing and a very substantial heat sink. It features a source direct switch for tone controls bypass and optical connection between amplifier stages for detailed sound. Speakers can be connected via A, B, A B front switching. The speaker binding posts accommodate bare wires or banana plugs. The power rating is 2 x 75W RMS at 8 ohms or 2 x 120W at 4 ohms. The Denon PMA-880R uses an Optical class A circuit design for optimum sound quality. Source Direct can be used to bypass tone controls. The Denon PMA-880R accommodates both MM moving magnet and MC moving coil Phono options via front switching.

The Denon PMA-880R has the following RCA inputs: Phono, CD, Tuner, Aux, DAT/Tape-1, DAT/Tape-2. The amp also has a Record Out Selector a headphone jack, and a loudness button.

      The specifications are as follows:

Power output: 75 watts per channel into 8Ω (stereo)
      Frequency response: 20Hz to 20kHz
      Total harmonic distortion: 0.02%
Input sensitivity: 0.2mV (MC), 2.5mV (MM), 150mV (line)
Signal to noise ratio: 76dB (MC), 94dB (MM), 110dB (line)
      Output: 150mV (line)
      Dimensions: 434 x 160 x 353mm
      Weight: 8.2kg
      Accessories: RC-156 remote control

Item Condition: Excellent. Presents as new.
Reason for selling: Not quite my tempo
Payment Method: Pickup - Cash, Paypal, COD Only
      Extra Info:
Conrad Johnson CA200 in perfect condition. A credit to it’s previous owner, presents as new.

185 Watts, Solid State Integrated with a plethora of inputs including theatre and EPL ins and outs. Also pre out for subwoofers.

Fantastic remote control, finally a remote fitting of a proper amplifier, machined aluminium, not some plastic junk.

Rich, full sound with robust sweet midrange. Excellent vocal reproduction.

Just purchased, selling at same price. Why? I am extremely particular about exactly what I am seeking and this is not quite my flavour. It joins another dozen quality amplifiers, most far more expensive, that have not meet all my criteria. It will however be perfect for many, many systems.

      Lots of reviews online.

All original packaging, owners manual and remote.

Being new I’m not sure if I’m supposed to start a new topic or tag onto an old one, so here I am.
We have a wonderful, if not old, stereo set-up with Rotel AMP and pre-amp, Yamaha multi CD player, an old turntable and Dali bookshelf speakers. I love using it, but the rest of the family just grabs the portable Bluetooth speaker and connects to their phones! In an attempt to use the digital technology and get a better sound than a portable Bluetooth speaker, I purchased an audio pro Addon C10. Much better sound – may need to get a second one!

Anyway, the point of all this, apart from lamenting my old system, was to see if anyone knows of a sound bar for the TV that is compatible with audio pro gear. I cannot seem to find one. Audiopro have a gadget called a’Link 1’ but a person at one particular  store was not sure it would connect to a soundbar or a TV.
Any ideas welcome! Maybe it’s as simple as using the Link 1?
