Not-too-expensive DAC

Recommended Posts

Hi

My uncle is looking for a not too expensive DAC that would outperform his Creative Soundblaster THX TruStudio PRO DAC?

He has got his eyes on the DacMagic Plus but that I think his CFO would not be happy yet so looking for something cheaper but better then what he has now.

Rgds

Patrick

May I also suggest that you PM the OP of this thread. He will have a very good DAC for sale at a lower price point.

Maverick TubeMagic DAC 1 or 2 depending on needs, very good DAC for the money & the ability to fiddle with tubes to modify the sound to your liking.

Cheers

Thanks for all the suggestions. I contacted him and he is after a DAC nothing over Canadian $200. Know it's not much but he is 76, retired and still loves his HiFi :-) He commented about the Arcam DAC with raving reviews and cost about $200 Canadian. Any other around that $?

Thanks

Pat

Thanks Matt

Anyone here tried the TubeMagic D1 with the Squeezebox touch?

Matrix Mini-i DAC. I'm currently using one and it sounds great. Admittedly i don't have much to compare it to, but it made a more than noticeable difference in my set up.

I've been trying to convince myself to purchase the TubeMagic D2 with upgraded tube and opamps.

The problem stopping me is I have just spent quite a bit on a carpc setup so if I suggest to the wife that I want to spend more on audio I may be in strife! But it's what I will end up getting I think. A friend has a similar setup to me with the TuebMagic D1 and it sounds great.

At the rate they're going, the Rega DAC will be selling for under $500 in a month or two. By all reports a wonderful DAC and the price is dropping like the pants of a 14 old boy with a porno.

I use a Maverick D1 with the squeezebox, and am very happy with it !! - cant believe how good they are for the money !! (got the squeezebox for 218 delivered)

at first, I preferred the analogue output of the squeezebox, but now I think the SPDIF into the Maverick DAC is a bit better - there are a couple of free mods for the squeezebox that make mine sound better, too.. have mucked around with various music sources, but the squeezebox beats the others hands down when it comes to convenience - and the quality is pretty reasonable for my ears.. only had mine for a month or so, but can't see myself wanting to let it go for a long time !!!
