My Classic Sony TC-765 Reel 2 Reel

Recommended Posts

I was contemplating some sort of cover for my R2R, and I came across this site that makes to order to suit ones unit

Also the brand and model of ones machine can be added

Anyone have alternatives ?

Hi Full, the Tape Deck discussions have stopped. What a pity. Thanks for the heads up on the cover. It looks interesting.

I found a Perspex dust cover for an RS1500 & I thought they looked great. Shows off the deck.

Has anyone bought any secondhand or new reels (without tape). If you have let me know the quality and the source.

Cheers

Have a look here BW - http://www.casstape.com.au/Price_Lists/AUDIO_WEBSITE.pdf

Or the RMGI site for other distributors - http://www.rmgi.com.au

Today I just happened to be on business just a block away from Totally Technical in Bowen Hills Brisbane

They are stockists of RMGI audio tape and also repair equipment

I called in and purchased 2 pancakes of 1/4" tape to suit 10 1/2 " reels - Pancakes are tape without the reel and is the most economical way to purchase audio tape

All that's needed is to fit it to the nab and wind it on an empty reel

And you ask what was the price for brand new tape ?

Two pancakes cost $92.20 inc GST ( That's a lot better than 30 year old tape from eBay )

Let the recording begin :)

A call out to see if any SNA members in Brisbane have the test equipment to check and adjust the Azimith on my heads

I can pay in superb coffee and a listening session of the system

Any takers

Just a progress update for all

Called in to a shop and purchased some CRC - CO Contact Electrical Cleaner

I then went home and pulled the covers off the Reel2Reel and proceeded to clean just about everything including the head and mechanism area

All dials and switches were cleaned by spraying and turning/operating back and forth just to do a thorough job of it

Put it all together again and connected it up again for testing

Result is a roaring sucsess everithing works - in fact it's silky smooth

Currently sitting here on my iPad to post while listening to some music of the seventies

So now that it's a keeper I need to pull it apart again to give the dials and knobs along with face plates a good polish

I have noticed a little tarnish on some areas and some age residue on the chrome parts, especially the dials

Unless anyone has another method ? I will use Braso metal cleaner and buff them to a shiny luster

Thoughts anyone ?

Paul, I just bought a Sony TC-765 Reel to reel. I need the nab hubs with I gues spacers. Can you help me out? Thanks

A spacer is used to align the tape to the heads

If you use the steel reels that require a NAB hub to secure them

Then yes you will need a spacer between the reel and the drive hub

The spacer is a seperate item and is made of hard foam approx 1 to 1.5 mm thick

Best way to make one yourself is

First find a thin mouse mat

Remove the top plastic cover carefully

And the foam that's used on the underside of the mouse mat is then cut to the size of the motor drive hub

The spacer must be removed when using the plastic reels as they lock in with the spring star lock on the shaft

Cant help with the after market hubs

However I do have one set left of the original NOS Sony NAB hubs

@Full Range. Nice machine there and love the horns! I'm just about to start giving my TEAC rtr a clean. Cant seem to remove the knobs so I'll just have to give them a wipe down. What can I use to give the heads a clean? I assume just an alcohol based cleaner> Same with the rollers/guides?

I'm new to this so I don't want to use the wrong stuff...

Cheers

Best I have found for cleaning heads is Isopropyl alcohol with some white magic foam

Same for the rollers

To rejuvenate the rollers you can use alcohol with very fine wet & dry sanding paper, brings them up like new, but only to be done while the rollers are spinning

The white magic foam with mild detergent is also fantastic on the rest of the unit as well

The knobs in these machines are generally secured in 3 ways and sometimes all methods are used on the same machine - depends on the size of the knob

1) An Allen key grub screw

2) Push in interference

3) D key push - sometimes with a spring steel holding key

Awesome tape machine!

i have the Japanese version of it the TC-R7-2

Fairly easy to maintain, and great sound.

To really hear how good  this machines are you will need original tapes, who's is the only let down on the R2R subject.

There is some new masters available but "gulp" around 400US for a album...

That is the beauty of blank tapes - brand new tapes are available

You can record your own music to your taste and mix and match your favourites

Excellent list @vintagejapan

Just be aware to check the speed of your machine to equal the speed of the pre-recorded tape

Hi gents

Really interesting information. I’m in Perth and have exactly the same machine, bought it in 1992, but as it’s been in storage for  a quite a few years I found it badly damaged. The reel holders had cracked, brakes shot, insides all clogged up, etc etc.  With the help of a local 3D printer and lots of cleaning fluid, isopropyl alcohol and white lithium grease , have now put everything right and its working really well - except for intermittent playback on the right channel. The VU meters show recording is  good and through earphones the input sound great, I have carefully resoldered all the wiring to the heads as it had come apart,  so it’s not that, have ensured that the alignment of heads is bang on, cleaned and demagnetised the heads . The erase head works fine. The recording ,volume is a little low despite the vu meters set at max, but the intermittent right channel problem continues. Have a damaged the head, anyone know of an old machine going begging I can get my hands on for spare parts?

thanks in advance

George

Teac X-3 Needs a belt. Got all the screws off the front panel and the parts that come off. Even took the back off.
The front panel is loose on top/bottom  and both sides. Can get about 1/2 inch if pull lightly BUT seems like something in the middle by the heads is stopping it.
A close look shows that it should lift right up from there. No need to take off the heads assembly. Tried looking for some screws from the back with no luck.
Got a schematic and looked ... either I'm blind or somethings wrong. Can anyone tell me the exact procedure to get this panel off so I can put new belts on and see if anything else if needed. I would really appreciate it. Thanks guys.
