progladyte
Here's what's on / been on the playlist for today: Here's a few reviews (by Others) NMB After a masterpiece like "The Similitude of a Dream" i was worried that Morse & Co. would never have been able to reach again the quality, the melodies, the sublimation of musical skills in an easy-lixstening context, without sounding cheap. "The Great Adventure" dont overcome its predecessor but exceeded my expectations, for sure. The formula is stil the same: complex instrumental passages, similar to a "certain progmetal" band, melodic refrains, some Beatlesesque verses, neverending vocals harmonies & emotional acoustic moments. All in all, less magniloquent melodies but a strong memorability "ou service de la musique" & flawless musicianship to make it real. And furthermore, i love the kind of concept albums, like this, where the main melodic line is repeated with different forms in various songs. Best Track: To The River ******************************************** Thieves' Kitchen - Genius Loci A modern gift for prog lovers.. Beautiful, spacious, and intricate modern prog that doesn't skimp on melody for the sake of complexity. The music is recognizable as coming from the tradition that started with Yes, Genesis, and Gentle Giant, say, but it is not derivative. Original, uplifting, interesting, and often beautiful, this is top-notch stuff. (This has scored 4.10 / 5.00 on RYM so far which indicates a very good album. 1st spin coming up. When l woke up l had this one song in my head. The band is so diversified, sounds like there is 3 different bands playing. Anyway just ordered it. So much for not buying any music for 3 months. Love this post, but sending me broke. Luckily l don't eat much . All you proggers out there have a listen. You won't be disapointed. progladyte
Italy became the country after UK that I found produced some of the best and most consistent symphonic and progressive rock music throughout the early 70's. They continue this tradition to this day. If you have already acquired everything you need from UK and surrounds, there can be no denying the huge impact that Italy made regarding this genre of music in the 70's. With a huge sound, pompous and grandiose arrangements together with excellent musicianship that embraced all manner of instruments, it was easy to admire just about everything they did. There is hardly an Italian progressive rock band that I don't enjoy as repeated listens brings out the very best in what these guys are doing. Some of the music is very accessible, some will require more concentrated efforts to fully absorb everything, but the rewards will follow. Even if you don't understand the Italian language (or any other language for that matter), it will be the unique music that captures the imagination. I'd tend to say yes, but I'm happy to hear your opinions on that. Cheers, Alberto Although The Beatles were considered to be very talented musicians, I don't often hear them as being labelled as part of the progressive rock movement. Their music certainly showed many progressive traits and concepts, together with a huge variety of musical concepts and ideas on each album but for some reason, they seemed to bypass the prog moniker. A brilliant band no less and one for which the world owes a debt of gratitude for laying the foundations for what would ultimately follow. betocool
I agree with all you say, and yet I'd rate Sgt. Peppers as an album apart from the rest, due to the different structure and orchestrations in there, a world apart from Revolver, which is in essence a great pop/rock album. I guess, Sgt. Peppers introduces a concept. Still, I also do not think of the Beatles as a prog band in that sense. Cheers, Alberto

One other band I enjoyed was Area. Italian prog it was, sometimes a bit "avant-garde", and once singer Demetrio Stratos passed away they shifted more to jazz rock fusion. Demetrio sure had a unique powerful voice. I particularly liked the jazz rock instrumental album "Tic & Tac". progladyte
Hey Pat, I too scored some Area albums back in the day. I had the 1st 4 on vinyl but sold one or two recently. Ironically, the album you liked, "Tic Toc" scored the least out of all their albums (2.71 / 5.00) compared to the rest (between 3.59 and 3.77 / 5.00). Have you heard their 1st, 2nd or 4th offerings? According to RYM they are listed as: Avant-Prog, Progressive Rock, Jazz-Rock, Free Improvisation, Jazz Fusion

progladyte
Here is a fantastic list from the Dutch progressive rock page, a site I frequent every few days. https://www.dprp.net/index.php If you have not yet discovered this excellent website, I can wholly endorse just about everything they do and publish. Their reviews are often what inspires me to explore a band immediately or at least put it on my wish-list for later investigation. You would be totally blown away by obscure bands and artists that I was curious about and deciding to explore all available options, found yet another fantastic piece of music / band that I had previously never heard of. Being based in Holland also gives them excellent access to a lot of the brilliant material emerging from Eastern Europe. What I like about this site is that they don't get bogged down too much with one hit blunders but concentrate on giving insightful reviews about bands that quite frankly a lot of us on SNA discuss on a daily basis. That's not to say that they don't give coverage to the more obscure bands and artists but the balance of the coverage between well known and emerging acts is pretty impressive. If you are looking for a seriously good site from which to glean some useful information, you can do no wrong with DPRP. Here goes: The Top 100 Progressive Rock Albums of the last decade (the 10s) To wrap-up the decade, we thought it'd be a bit of fun to take a look back at the most popular albums of the last 10 years; as voted for in our annual end of year polls. The first three years are taken from the results of our readers poll. The more recent years are the most popular albums, as voted for by the writers at DPRP. Showing the strength-in-depth of the current progressive genre, no less than 59 different artists have been selected; with only ten appearing with more than two albums. Steve Hackett wins the award for the most prolifically-popular artist; appearing six times. He is followed by Big Big Train (5 times) and Spocks Beard, Neal Morse and The Pineapple Thief (4 times). If you were to award points based on an artist's placement in each year's Top 10 list, then the Top 10 Prog Rock Artists of the Decade would be: Big Big Train Steven Wilson Riverside Steve Hackett Opeth Spocks Beard Haken Marillion Anathema Neal Morse Anyway here is the list of the Top 100 Progressive Rock Albums of the 10s, split into year of release.... 2010 1.
