Opeth's new spinner

Third or fourth spin and I'll admit it grabs you and won't let go.

The choruses are so damned catchy and memorable. Musicianship is superb as expected but it's totally different compared to their best ever effort called "Damnation" from 2003

Hope you have the English version, difficult to follow the Swedish libretto :thumb:

I have 24 of the listed titles. Have to query ELO's El Dorado being there, as well as the Soft Machine album (always considered them as jazz). A few of the tail-enders I have never even heard of.

Ashamed to say, only 9.

Must admit though, l have not heard of most of the first 30.

Got most of the top 5.

Take pleasure in listening to 50 down to 30 on Spotify, if listed.

Uhm.... 48

Ruins & Meshuggah didn't do anything for me unfortunately except hit the eject button.

I also question ELO being on the list considering many of the great Italian bands such as Le Orme, Museo Rosenbach, Il Rovescio della Medaglia, etc were omitted. Still it's a pretty comprehensive list and one that is hard to question overall.

If you guys have enjoyed the prog journey so far, you're gonna wet yer pants when you discover so many of the lesser known bands.

Trust me, this will be a multiple orgasm for the ears for decades to come.

For those of you progsters with a penchant for digital files, perhaps I can help you out with some samples.

This site has come alive. I for one, am very happy. Love sharing the joy.

Here's a rough extract from Gnosis2000 for music from England during the 1970's.

While most of the inclusions relate to prog and other sub genre, I've included a few essentials like Led Zeppelin / Queen / Roxy etc cos they're so damned good. There are plenty of other great bands from this era but you prolly know them anyway so I haven't included them.

You'd be pretty safe with just about anything listed here although Y.M.M.V.

Here goes:

If you were dipping yer toes into the prog pool for the first time, you could easily jump on at least one title by each band to see what you thought. If you're not sure about anything, just drop me a message or check out RYM or any of the other sites that list prog.

Cheers

FYI, Number 48, Black Noise by FM. I haven't actually heard it, but I do have a vinyl copy of their Direct to Disc album. Fifteen minutes to each side each of which is one continuous piece. Sound quality is very good, and the music while relatively brief is also very enjoyable. I wasn't actually aware that they had other stuff out there as I thought they may have been created simply to do the audiophile recording. Qobuz has some of their stuff, including Direct to Disc.

FYI,

Nash The Slash spent a few years within each decade from 1970's to 1990's as FM's guitarist but as I only have their first 2 albums, I can't really comment on what he brought to the table after that.

Mind you, the first album is brilliant and the follow up is pretty good too.

Okay, so at first look it's post-rock again.   But there's definitely a proggy feel to it.  Even if to me it sounds a bit too much Pink Floyd like in places.  Great album.  As are their others for that matter.

Monkey3 - Astra Symmetry.

Upon which planet has he been for the past (almost) fifty years?
