unclemack
Don’t know how “out there” this is but I guess it’s Avant Garde. Haven’t played it for years and was shocked by how good it is. Dark jazz baby...
Ian McP
https://boomkat.com/products/from-the-stairwell-66f1ec88-209c-4a4d-8134-6ca7482f6a1b < The long-running project of breakcore man Jason Kohnen (aka Bong Ra) and Gideon Kiers, 'From The Stairwell' is The Kilimanjaro Darkjazz Ensemble's latest shadowy collection of creeping, Lynchian jazz and it might just be their most successful to date. With each album Kohnen and Keirs seem to rely less on their production smarts and more on the qualities of their selection of players, and 'From The Stairwell' is truly a testament to that. With incredible smoky vocals from Charlotte Cegarra, achingly melancholy violin from Sarah Anderson and the usual blend of subtle electronics and impressively programmed beats it is easy to dissolve into the band's 60s movie-soundtrack flecked world. A common comparison is made to similarly located band Bohren Und Der Club of Gore, but The Kilimanjaro Darkjazz Ensemble are somewhat more hopeful than that, occasionally letting slivers of light filter into their pitch-black jazz.>

Yeah it is as one/two off. Not really into it for longer/album length listening. It's got this vibe at a mid point between some minimalist approaches (Reich/Glass/Eno) and something Bach would do in his Preludes/Fugues. In saying that it's early days for this musician. Much more maturing and musical evolution to be done yet.
