What have folk got their teeth into right now... crime dramas of the darker nature ....

I've been on a serious bender with this genre of cop shows :D

all started with Wallander which i discovered on SBS on demand... the original swedish version....both wife and i were captivated... Hening Markell is a genius...

after this was a bit stuck and discovered Hinterland...wow welsh stunning scenery  and quite thought provoking stories...really enjoyed the feel and pace of this one.

A friend then pointed me to The Killing... and apparently that is what kicked off the whole noir genre... with the character of Sarah Lund.... stunning series ... hooked start to end !

Shetland - Watched a part episode ... had to stop... after the depth and dark nature of the scandy crime dramas this was like watching Doc Martin or something :D

Dead Wind... Finnish crime drama  - quite liked this for the more modern scandinavian production it was. @agelessgoodguy did you suggest this one to me ?

The Bridge - Watched part of a one episode - didnt get straight into it.. might have to get back to this...

We Got this -  swedish with an american expat, quite comical and stumbling along and quite hilarious and unbelievable at times... but in a fun sort of way... was a nice take out of more series crime dramas

Broadchruch - English... a bit more soppy but followed a little along the cop with issues line and enjoyed this and it pulled at heart strings

Lupin - The french gentleman thief...oh this was good fun..watched series one ... cant wait for series 2 which has been shot ... just awaiting runnings around the world of S1

Luther -     @joz suggested i check this one out ... very enjoyable english dodgy cop drama :D did get a little predictable and also unbelievable at times ... but some good surprises....really wel made show...

Vera - hmm not sure what to make of this ... part watched 3/4 of one episode and just didnt hook me ... a bit all over the place ? maybe need to persist with it ?

Line of Duty... oh gosh watched all 6 series ! just finished .... great acting and well made.......

so where does this leave me as a nordic noir crime drama tragic...looking for next fix :D

some still to check out ...

BorderTown

Trapped

The Bridge - think i should revisit ...

and

Marcella....

any other suggestions are alway welcome ... :D

so what have folks caught in this genre ? what are you watching now ...

Trapped was good - no s2 on disc though so I've been waiting for a drop on iTunes.

The Bridge was good in all it's forms. To be honest I actually liked the Sicario like American version. That was fantastic and hard core. Same with The Killing.

Was wanting to check out that new one also, Wisting

Try Sharp Objects as a candidate for intense crime drama...

https://www.imdb.com/title/tt8290362...

And for an entertaining crime drama watch with a tad of dark humour...Big Little Lies...

understand no problem...dont mind some of the breaks ... stretch of legs and such ... but can understand if an annoyance... re PQ i'll post some screen shots ... some of free streamed is really quite good :) but yes agree catchup is probably only good for the telly not larger projected image :)

Below is Hinterland via netflix... while mostly watched on the small screen, i thought id put up on the JVC projector to see what like, its a series with lovely welsh scenery and comes up quite good actually... can see limits of streaming this is only 2k SDR, and audio wise theres bio atmos or anything but  i was upmixing to 7.1.6 ! and that was very good as well !

Picture wise Lupin was very good via netflix and watched this on the jvc n7 projector and looks pretty good for streaming. Well shot and has an interesting look to it. Audio is some sort of 5.1 pcm which am upmixing with neural X to 7.1.6 :) and sounds pretty good :) to boot...

I've seen a few of those and enjoyed them.

The second season of Broadchurch seemed to take too long to get started and I gave up.

I really like Vera, it's not exactly noir, but it sure isn't light with lots of 'snappy' dialogue the way many US series are (thank goodness).

Marcella is very good. Give it a go. It's crime drama and is intense. Line of duty is one of the best series I have seen. Fast paced and gets you glued to the screen.

finished Trapped...gosh what a convoluted mess they uncovered ! fantastic finish as well... I wonder if it will lead to subsequent series from here ?

anyways another lockdown... and with comments here, last night we checked out Marcella. found it on netflix which is good, didnt want to pay for it on apple...per episode :D

intriguing start to it and before we know it we were hooked into this as well... not much character development in it beyond marcella but like london setting and the intrigue of goings on has our interest ..fantastic picture on audio on this as well. be very interesting how this progresses :)

Hey Betty, good topic.  Ive probably watched at least half of those series you listed and quite a few others in similar vein, though my wife eventually jacked up and said 'enough' (too dark).

For me, Sarah Lund will always be hard to beat as a character, still miss her.

Hilgrimson was also a good character in early The Eagle series (I havent seen the later ones yet).

ah marcela ... we are truly hooked... we binged our way through season 1 yesterday after kids had gone to bed...

...gosh... and yes i see marcela is very much the Sarah Lund reincarnate...so those that enjoyed her charecter in "The killing" that kicked off the nordic noir genre, this will be very much up your alley... so many similarities in her charecter.. Marcela very much carries the series. more character developement as episodes go on with each of other characters ... but its slow..but you get to know ..just a little bit more as things go along...

looking forward to series 2 marcela, I wonder where or how this will go or lead...

Sorry to be a party pooper, but IMO season 2 of Marcella is a huge disappointment. I won't say anymore but it was enough to put me off watching any more series that they might produce.

oh i wouldn't be surprised... follow ups are always a tough gig... especially all went into the first series / part. happy to give a go though, but am also not shy to just drop it if turns to point not worth while :)

Watched a trio of movies kicking off with The Seven-Ups only to realise it was connected to Bullitt a movie released prior and The French connection I & II that followed,

      fantastic movies !

Apart from them being crime, police dramas a common thread in them I found was Producer Philip D'Antoni
      https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Philip_D'Antoni

I watched The Seven-Ups first off, which is an interesting movie about a team of police men working undercover on cases that would send the perpetrators off for 7 years or more. Has a car chase scene with Roy Schneider who stars in the movie flying through the streets of New York. Core to the movie according to Philip D'Antoni was that was he wanted a sense of the real. reality and all the characters are very real every day sorts and not leaving out the raw and the grit.

Watching Bullitt next it has also that fantastic car chase scene through the streets of san francisco. staring Steve Mcqueen and his scene in the mustang chasing a charger in the streets probably goes down in the history of car chase movies ! The movie won an academy award for film editing of all things. sticking to the line of keeping it real, true to the times and not leaving out any of the raw and grit had the movie inducted in the National film registry for preservation by the library off congress due to it being "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant"

I watched French Connection next and it is set predominately in the us is based on true characters and events picks up on activities of the mob/organised crime and international drug smuggling. This time around there is Gene Hackman who is the larger than life loud mouth american cop and partnered by Roy Schneider. It was the first R rated movie to win an academy award and won a few academy awards (including best actor for Gene Hackman) and was nominated for a few more ! again a film that is inducted in the national film registry for preservation for same reasons as Bullitt.

French connection 2 based totally in france Has Gene Hackman returning but Roy schneider is no where to be seen. while didnt do as well in the box office I found it a good closing o the story and an important one

I have watched these films many many years prior as a kid, and again some decades later, but first time as a trio here and very much enjoyed especially understanding the thread of commonality between them  and their significance  some true crime classics and great to be able to enjoy.
