Goodaye all

Just picked up another Sansui AU505 to do up.

First thing l noticed was  the earth pin had neatly been cut off the 3 pin plug.

A  former owner proberly had a earth loop going on.

Either that or they were a thrill seeker.

Had packaging tap to insulate the low voltage feed from the transformer.

Fuses are intact .

Apart from that its a pretty clean unit.

This is going to be fun.

Gotta stop buying Sansui amps.

regards Bruce

Yes, I would change the plug so it's safely earthed.  I liked the look of the black Sansui's in the 70's, although I ended up getting a silver JVC with my limited funds.

I had an AU-505 once, very nice sound, and internally looks like a cross between the AU-555 and the AU-555A.

The AU-505 is a nice one, considered something of a "giant killer" (bang for buck) on audiokarma who have several nice threads showing upgrades etc, they include the blaxandall diode and a cap mostly copied from the 555A/555(?) I run my fully refurb'd unit through some moderately efficient vintage altecs (102dB?) for background listening. Mine had a hum issue which was a pita to track down. Hum persisted after converting to a star GND, noticed one of the tone caps was resting on the p-on lamp, moved cap and all good (doh!)

Not good about the earth pin, like you say, thrill seeker...

Looking at a marantz 2285B where both the active and neutral are switched via p-on/off switch. Both lines have snubber caps. The switches in these units are prone to failure so maybe switching both is an idea of extending the switch life. Have implemented a triac for switching. Anyone with other examples of both active/neutral switching?

Put it on the DBT for a quick test.

Bulb lit up dim and then nothing, not sure if it was the amp or bulb.

No magic smoke leaking out.

It can wait.

l have other AU505's l can use.?

Finishing up a Sansui AU2900, AU417 and a spare AU505.

Figure if l flip the lot l can get a Alpha in the door without any grumbling.

regards Bruce
