Buying equirement fro oversea??

Hi all,

 

Regarding the hihg price tag in our country., any recommandation of buying stereo equirements from oversea?

You can try and search and compare with local shops to see if what you are after is cheaper. Most main brands will not sell to you cheaper for new if there is a local distributor. Second hand local and over seas and much cheaper under 50%.

Generally if you are investing a decent sum of money, I would strongly recommend buying local in order to have the security of a warranty as well (and probably more importantly) support of the local retailer.  Local retailers from quality Hi-Fi shops are often underrated and they should not be.  

 

That said I did buy an Emotiva CD players (ERC-2) for the equivalent of $AUD500 when the US to Australian dollar exchange rate was very favourable.  The item arrived and was well packaged.  And it’s a great mid-level CD player.

If you want value, buy well looked after gear from the Classifieds.  

 

You do realise that you are not likely to get imported things repaired locally and cannot even get spare parts. Importing  anything over $1,000 will likely get hit with extra duties, charges at roughly 25%.

25% of duties? I thikn it will be 10%GST.

 

So, if 25%duties + shipment, it will be almost the same price to get one of those from here in Australia.

I agree with you that, if the product cost a lots, it's worth to buy here and have warrant backup.

Yes, in fact, I want to buy second hand, but I am awear to the quality and maintance of them.

GST isn't the only think to consider. There are handling fees, storage fees, assessment fees, and in totality it is an excellent example of Australia's national defining characteristic, which by the way is not AFL or cricket, but the ability to take a simple thing and make it complicated.

 

The AU$4.5k preamp that was AU$2.5k overseas ended up costing me A$4k by the time I got to the end of the import process. Do go into this with your eyes open.

We did the numbers here before and it turned out that buying new o/s was a little cheaper at the cost of no backup.

Buying second hand through SNA classifieds is the only way to go. I have spent $6.4 k here over the last 8 years, made $3.8 in sales, and am listening to what would have cost $13 k if bought new. All items in immaculate condition. Have no fear, SNA is not ebay, sellers here are good people.

I bought some specialist cables last year from overseas, and can attest that an extra of around 25% is added to the base price. I've been tempted to get some other items from overseas (which can be obtained in Australia), but after calculating it carefully,  have decided it's not worth it. As others have said, you have no support, and that theoretical saving might not work out to be worth the risk at the end of the day. So I'll only get something overseas if it's something which can't be obtained at all locally.

 

I can attest to buying second hand from SNA classifieds. I just obtained a Naim XPSDR from another member, at nearly half the cost of what it would be new. It's the first time I've purchased something from here - and it's still a fair bit of money even discounted like this - so was very nervous. I had a very good experience though, and was left with great impressions of the member I bought it from.

When all the dust had settled my TEKTON speakers landed cost a premium of around 40% over the price I bought them for in the USA. GST is only the beginning...

 

SNA purchases rule. You can find anything here if you are patient!
