DJGopal
I mean, there's dozens of combos that work great at that price point. There's no such thing as "best" as we all have different preferences. Get into your local and start listening for yourself. It's the only way to make sure YOU will be happy.
RockandorRoll
Ive never been a 'sub' guy, but i think even a sub guy would question 2x subwoofers for a bedroom setup Devialet Phantom?
PauliD
I'm using Kef LSX and a JL Audio Dominion d108 combo as a WFH desktop setup with great results. Maybe look at some active speakers that offer some level of DSP and other tweaking and you'll still get it under $4000. That would Mean less boxes in the room, but more power points required. Its fun to spend other peoples money

I thought I wasn't a sub guy, until a dealer switched on a REL while demoing a pair of $2,000 bookshelves. I am a believer. I would rather have $700 bookshelves and a musical sub, over any $2,000 bookshelf speaker (and probably more expensive than that)

We can go a little larger than that...even up to standard bookshelf size. The restriction relates more to room size vis. a vis. acoustics. You can assume there is room for a pair of stands in this spec
RockandorRoll
I was thinking of the Phantom because it has massive bass to help with the subwoofer aspect. But its also relatively cable free. No amps, no DACs etc. You can get a pair on stands and have a clean looking system.
warweary
My thoughts on the OP arrangement system is... yep that'll work. I'm running a pair of Vaf evo 1 ($2k), with two Vaf SW2 subs ($2k/pair, and a Nad D7050 ($1.2 k) running them, source is a pc. I am really fond of this system, it brings me great pleasure every day. Almost fits OP budget too and certainly works wonders in my small office room of about 12 m^2.

warweary
I reckon/guess someone could haggle and get 2 vaf i90's and 2 vaf SW2's + an amplifier for $4kish. Vaf have been known to have 30% discount specials every few years. The vaf i90 is an absolutely glorious little speaker, has the best imaging i've ever heard - sad I sold mine . Timster
Here's what my office setup has ended up at in the last month, for under $1,400 The Speaker Project Home Course DIY kits (Currently $599 + some time and effort, plus a couple of low cost mods) Topping DX3 Pro DAC/Headamp $400 Topping PA3 $170 Audio Pro B2-50 Sub (beaten up, needed some TLC, found online for $100) Amazing sound in the 3.5x4 room with vaulted ceilings. I am really impressed with how this sounds and it has replaced a much more expensive setup that I have now been able to redeploy
Sounder10
That is interesting, how would you compare the sound of these DIY speakers with known commercial brands?
Timster
I have directly compared the speaker project kits (SPKs) to the VAF DC-2 Gen 3 (latest version, with all upgrades) and they are easily their equal IMO. Slightly different voicing - the SPKs are a little warmer, with the VAFs a little more "clinical". Both are great. The SPKs throw a big image, especially when moved out into a room on stands. Being rear ported they prefer to be further from a wall. I have dialed back my sub quite a bit to blend with the SPKs. I can also attest that for a lot of music that I have tried so far, the sub is not absolutely needed. The VAFs were my office system, along with Schiit Modi MB, Jotunheim and Vidar. Interestingly the VAFs appear to use exactly the same SB Acoustics mid-woofer (well they may have customised it a bit) but visually it's exactly same as the SPK mid-woofer. (For transparency too, I am a VAF fan - have had DX-X Gen 4 and currently have DC-7 Gen 4, DC-2 Gen 3, and centre/surrounds in the HT are all VAF) The mods I made to the SPK extended to a cross brace between the side panels and lining the cabinet walls with the barium damping sheets from jaycar to better control resonance, max $50.
