surprisetech
Very sad news today of the passing of Pierre Baroni, passionate radio presenter & DJ, and host of Soulgroove ‘66 on 3PBS. Sincere Condolences to Pierre’s family, friends & fellow presenters. It will feel like there’s a hole in our Saturday afternoons for a while I think. A brief tribute has been posted on the PBS homepage. https://www.pbsfm.org.au/news/vale-pierre-baroni
metal beat
That is a real shame. I remember Pierre when he was in the band The Pony in the late 80's. I saw them live and towards the end I wanted them to play " Blindman" from their first album. I was yelling out " Blindman" at the end of about 3 songs so they would play it - Pierre yelled back at me after the 3rd time - I know you are mate!! very funny - they played Blindman as 2nd last song still remember that 30 years later. I am going to have to give Thorns & Cutlery a spin. RIP Pierre.
Ian McP
A very sad loss, here's a tribute taken from Chris Gill's regular email from Northside Records. VALE PIERRE BARONI 30th Oct 1955 - 9th March 2021 Pierre was a beautiful man. A man who spread happiness, a man who shared joy and was masterfully diplomatic. There were only friends and people who had danced with him. Running his radio show SOUL GROOVE 66 on pbs fm from 2003 Pierre had also been on the station since 1997 helping out his friend Vince Peach. This show was a great source of soul for many and also a support for lots of local bands as well. It was with Vince that Pierre ran SOUL IN THE BASEMENT. A funky soul night that was at Cherry and ran for nearly 16 or so years. This night was really an important catalyst that introduced so many young folks to soul music and made this city crazy for the groove. He played SOUL A GO GO and SLOW GRIND FEVER too, some hot local club nights that also brought the fever. Pierre was not only a DJ but a photographer and infact was head of Mushroom's art department from the 80's and he had a hand in lots of great covers including the iconic ARCHIE ROACH "Charcoal Lane" his debut. He was in a band called THE PONY in the 80's as well with his brother, Dean. He played nearly all of our JAMES BROWN XMAS PARTIES with us and he will be dearly missed. Not just missed but fondly remembered as we hear some songs that were his staples and of bands like The Bamboos and Deep Street Soul and Saskwatch that he loved and deeply supported. Rest in peace soul Brother.
