Quinardo
Snap lockdown in VIC so good time to revisit some gear thats been sitting around! Day 1: Amp: Kenwood KA-8100 DAC: HTPC to AQ Dragonfly Red Cables: assortes but mainly MIT EXPS-2 / AVT-3 Speakers: Assorted; mainly Tannoy XT8F or Balmoral. Loving the tunability / specific settings possible on the KA-8100 tone settings ~ flexible. Horrible speaker terminals though. Any Kenwood fans out there?
mbz
Had a KA-7100, speaker posts drove me mad, easy job to change them out but it will loose that great original look.. The KA-8100 looks fantastic and is highly regarded in the vintage fraternity. Be mindful of ventilation, typically there would be holes/vents in the baseplate which a soft mat or pillow may block/restrict air flow. 1
Quinardo
Day 2: AMP: TEAC BX-550 Others: Same Lovely VU meters! 55 watts @ 8ohms. Lovely Mids/Vocals compared to Day 1 Kenwood KA-8100; everything is a bit looser in presentation and feels less damped. Gets a bit grainy if pushed too hard. Not sure if TEAC made any more higher end Amps or it was only done under Esoteric brand? Any ideas? Cheers
Quinardo
Day 3: Happy Monday! Back in Black, Marantz PM-17. Not a VU meter but a temperature gauge; definitely sounds better when warmed up a bit past the 12 o clock position. Anyone know if theres a big difference in going up to a PM-15S1 or the likes? * Also love using it's pre-out to my Marantz SM-6 power amp.
audiofeline
Never seen a temp guage on an amp before, but it's a great idea. Looks very cool. Is the Marantz valve or solid state?
