The average age of a Stereo.NET user

Recommended Posts

I just want to know what the demographic looks like on Stereo.NET. Or even Hi-Fi forums and communities in general. Not to cause any offence, or to bring in some sense of ageism. Also no, this is not a space to solicit anything.

I myself am 25 (turning 26 in a couple weeks), but it seems like this hobby tends to skew towards 35+ in general. I do find understanding the age demo of communities to be interesting as my dayjob is working on big brands in the digital space (again, not soliciting services here).

I can answer this for you.

21.82% - 45-54

20.83% - 35-44

19.78% - 25-34

18.57% - 55-64

11.08% - 65+

8.02% - 18-24

So you'll see the spread is very even across 25-64 actually.

35+ in general.

Haha. We wish!

Go to a hifi show and it's a meeting place for hordes of 50 year+ balding portly red faced nutters that honestly shouldn't be allowed out too often who almost exclusively listen to DSOTM and DS's and Led Zep and wear t shirts that are 2 sizes too small for them.

As a bald 50++ I can attest to this fact.

I reckon the average age would work out to be around the early 50's and like all averaging does, it levels the field a bit.

I myself drag the average down a bit being on the young side.

This is actually a poor representation of the demographic of "our" show.

On Saturday last show, we had a real problem with prams and strollers clogging the corridors.

At the Krix cinema, on the Sunday we had to actually turn down the demo, due to the amount of kids showing up with parents.

So while that photo is real, it is not a good example of the show demographic across all hours of all three days. Friday tends to be retirees, in my experience.

More important is what music do you like and buy?

new music can keep any oldie young and hip.

That's the reason Shane...they're under the age of 18 but they can't actually read yet. I saw plenty spitting the dummy but then you'd expect that wouldn't you.

Statistics never tell the full story do they. I told a few parents with strollers, those big 3 wheeled BMW ones that they'd be best not to go into that room or this room as they just endlessly play DSOTM, the rare pressings on gear you could spend a house deposit on.

They rushed into the rooms like lemmings and clogged up the hallways with the strollers and their kids ears with the PF bouncing out through the open doorways as mothers checked the strollers.

Money, it's a gas.Grab that cash with both hands and make a stash.

There's worse  life lessons out there isn't there.🤩:)

New music keeps me young, mentally at least. I have never, ever been accused of being hip, ever.

And speaking of hips.......... No not really, it's both my ankles and my right  knee that have slowed me down.

This is actually quite interesting. Really would like to see a bit of targeting to 18-35 year olds from retailers and brands. I know a pretty younger-skewing Aussie latte + milk brand “Minor Figures” are holding a competition to win a Planar 6 and a pair of Klipsch’s.

Would be great to see some brand collaborations and sponsorships with younger Aussie artist/producer types as well and really get some fresh faces into the growing hi-fi community.
