Further information:

I have purchased the World Designs KEL84 fully assembled and tested by the manufacturer in England. Selling it as I have too many amplifiers. Need more room.  This amplifier is new and  I have turn it on once when it arrived from England.   12 watts (into 8ohms) is a perfect amplifier to pair with efficient speakers such as B&W, horn etc.  Warm sound and great for vocals and instruments. Appended below is a brief description I have taken from their website on the KEL84 and World Designs.

World Designs KEL84  integrated amplifier 12W (into 8 ohms) which punches above its weight and is an ideal low cost introduction to valve amplifiers. This amplifier is powered by the EL84 medium power pentode originally designed by Mullard. This design uses PCBs for the majority of the components for easy build and is just perfect for smaller rooms or efficient speakers. Read the full review in Hi-Fi World May 2012 edition, where it was awarded full marks on the link provided. http://www.world-designs.co.uk/index_htm_files/WD KEL84 HFW_May12.pdf

Note : KEL 84 is available from World Designs either as a DIY kit or pre-built. This unit is built and tested in World Designs factory based in Totnes England. For interstate buyer,  let me know your address I can organise courier to quote. Included Manual, valves and IEC power cord.

Hi-Fi World, DIY supplements and World Audio Design - the early years

World Designs, and its predecessor company World Audio Designs (WAD), came about following a decision in Spring 1993 by Noel Keywood of the magazine Hi-Fi World  to publish a regular supplement alongside the magazine explaining and instructing enthusiasts in the art of making their own equipment, particularly amplifiers and speakers. The supplements proved popular, and the second issue set the ball rolling with a reworking of the classic Mullard 5-20 amplifier which was offered as a kit. The decision proved to be an immediate success, tapping into a demand for valve amplifiers and loudspeaker kits. The vehicle providing the materials for the home enthusiast to assemble himself was World Audio Designs. New designs followed throughout the next decade, including the venerable K5881 and 300B push pull amplifiers and a number of speakers. Many of these products received wide praise. WAD drew on experienced designers, like Tim de Paravicini (EAR-Yoshino) and Andy Grove (Audio Note) with Noel Keywood and Dominic Baker (now Technical Director at Audio Partnership) from the magazine. WAD was sold in 2004 so that Noel could concentrate on the magazine.

World Designs is born

Following the sale in 2004, WAD changed hands again in 2005 when Peter Comeau bought it. Peter (later to become Director of Acoustics for IAG in China) relaunched WAD as World Designs (WD) and set about rationalising the product range while developing new amplifiers and speakers. Peter left WD in 2010 to join IAG where he is active in producing new designs for brands like Quad. WD launched the forum.

Ownership changes

When Peter left to join IAG, WD was owned briefly by Dave Cawley (Timestep and Sound Hi Fi). Dave held the fort following Peter’s departure and sold WD to Matthew Snell, the current owner, in 2011.

Matthew Snell and the future

Matthew bought WD following a chance conversation with Dave Cawley. Matthew had been aware of WAD (building a 6550 amplifier in 2005) and mentioned this to Dave who informed him that WD was now part of Dave’s portfolio. One thing leads to another, and Matthew liked the amplifiers so much he bought the company. Matthew is not only a music-lover, he has long experience in business and embraces the philosophy that good customer support is fundamental to any company. The future of WD? Some new products are planned, but the philosophy remains unchanged

I bought these amps off the original owner approximately two years ago. I thought they were a revelation compared to what I was using before Prima Luna. And I was also able to see why a fairly modestly priced pair of amps would get such a high recommendation in the Stereophile Recommended components reviews.

In fact these were an upgrade on a Stereo Prologue Premium I was running (and sold when I bought these). One major difference from the upgrade was that instead of running KT88s and then trying KT120s and KT150s on the stereo amp to get enough power, I was able to run these on EL34 tubes and get both a more powerful, yet sweeter sound at the same time (although you can run KTs if you prefer).

I did roll out the original Prima Luna EL34s and replace them with 2 lots of 4 Platinum Matched Tung-Sol tubes which (to my ears) gave an even better sound - the original tubes are provided as well, of course. I don't have a tube tester but I have had no problem with them and I'm guessing they have probably run about 1,000 hours.

In terms of the smaller 12AU7 tubes, I am running Genalex Gold Lion ECC83s, again, to my ears, a significant upgrade on the original tubes.

I replaced these about 6 months ago with a much higher up the tree Pass Labs XA30.8 Class A amp which also offers a sweet, tube-like sound. In that regard it is not that much different, but being solid-state is a possibly a fraction more balanced throughout the whole spectrum (swapping over was definitely not economically rational).

One final note. The previous owner added the mirrors that sit behind the tubes as a "blingy" upgrade. It is not really my style to change away from original, but actually it doesn't look too bad, and so I never took them off - but I think you could easily do so if you prefer.

In terms of a demo, I have one restriction which is that the only pair of speakers I have in the house is an Active pair, meaning I can't easily demonstrate these. If you can bring your own speakers, I can hook them up so you can listen to them in situ.

With the equivalent new pair costing $8k, I think these are a great way to get into tubes in a hassle-free way, with the auto-biasing etc making these no harder to run than solid state amps.
