WTB: Garrard 301 Turntable

Recommended Posts

Item: Garrard 301 Turntable
Price Range: Nothing specific, will pay fair market price depending on condition.
Item Condition: Excellent working condition. Prepared to restore if necessary though.

Extra Info: The time has come again for me to have one of these in my stable as a long term admirer, and investment. Our dearly departed Duc sourced me one a few years ago and then I stupidly moved it on when I needed some funds for another purchase. It was in excellent condition and I regret selling it now.

Don’t get hook on Garrad , they are not perfect like your airforce TT or others high end TT but some how the imperfect sound is very organic and addictive . The photo you post is like from artisan fidelity is very expensive .
You may find an average condition is easier and rebuilt like I did with mine .

Yeah ideally I would like to restore one and build/buy a plinth etc - all part of the experience.

The one I posted is stunning, but very expensive way of doing it. Great way to go if you have the money and no DIY skills.

I don’t expect it to outperform my TechDAS - but a 301 is on the bucket list. I don’t plan on kicking it anytime soon but thought it best to put the feelers out now and even just put it away, while they are still available.

Marc,

Contact Tony Boy in Manila (November Hi-Fi show) he has many contacts and lots of  Garrard 301's there.

Great idea - thanks Al!

Anyone local have a 301 they're looking to part with? Still looking.

It fits the bill aesthetically. Not sure on its performance though. There’s an appeal for me to resurrect an old deck to its former glory.

Frankly I'd not fossick around when the end product is going to perform in a SOTA setting and ancillaries .

I've owned 4 X 301's and now if I had the urge(as apparent here) I'd go straight to Audio Grail UK and get one fully up to spec

end game9_9

Or if one feels to locate one locally once again it'd go to A Grail or Terry and Bob Mortimer( whose father designed the 301)

at Loricraft UK for a total refurbishment. I'd think one would be extremely lucky to find restorer here that would match these two organisations.

I did use Loricraft with my last one and received my unit back in Fully NOS Factory spec--end game again.--

I did try the "best"Australian gentleman with another one of mine and sadly it was an  much inferior job

to the one completed by the above two mentioned.

I listened to different Plinths and only two came up to snuff to my ears-- I keep  the measurements of the favoured design in case I get the itch againxD

Interested to see how you go Marc.

I’m also keen to hear from those helping you out.  Not Duc is no longer with us, I’m very interested to hear who the go-to would be in Melbourne for help with restoration and setup of old Garrards......

In terms of building one, have a look at these guys.  I have their 2-arm plinth for my 401 (I know, I know - a work in very slow progress!).  Very nice and fit your bill, for very reasonable prices.....

Good luck with your hunt for a Garrard 301. Looking at the Classic Turntable Company LTD (info@classichifi-shop.co.uk) and they seem to sell all the bits to make a 301 from the ground up.....that would keep you busy! Finally sold those Telefunken Audion Headphones.........the Buyer sounds like he will love them.

Cheers

Marc,

Could be worth an email to "sales@peakhifi.co.uk" in Sheffield. They seem to be one of a crowd of Garrard 301 specialists who claim to have a variety of 301/401 on the books. Be interesting to see what's lurking in the UK. Interesting to see how much following these turntables have 50 to 60 years on.

Cheers

Marc,

The one person you need to locate is Terry O'Sullivan in the UK. He is/was the founder of Loricraft Record Cleaning machines and is regarded as the prime reason (or one of them) for the ongoing interest in the 301/401/501 and 601 turntables. I met him in the UK back in the mid 90's and hopefully he is still with us. An interesting man in the world of audio...fingers in all sorts of products.....Loricraft, Garrard, SME(?) and also L'Art du Son products. I met him at his home to pick up a bottle of CD Cleaner. He is/was a model train fanatic with the trains set up through 3 rooms (literally through the walls!). Not a trace of audio gear in the house!

Anyway......hire a Private Eye and locate him. Good luck!

Cheers

Apparently in May 2018 SME acquired Loricraft (the only authorised Garrard service agent in the UK). Terry O'sullivan was the Managing Director at that time. In 2020 manufacture of their cleaning machines was interrupted....maybe COVID- related. The Loricraft factory and Terry lives in Baydon , Wiltshire to the west of London. With his level of experience with the 301 his contact base alone would be extraordinary. There was talk in 2018 of starting the manufacture of Garrard turntables but...?

Interesting that Jay Garrett (Stereonet UK Editor) reported on a newly released Garrard 301 with SME 12 inch arm at the 2019 Munich Hi Fi Show. There are some photos of the 301....wow!

Worth contacting him to see what's happening in the UK.

Yeah when we received that press release I was quite excited. We followed up on that one at the time with a purchase enquiry - but it fell on deaf ears. If I recall, it was only intended to be produced in very limited numbers, and I'm not sure if any were even made.

In any case, I've got my UK guys on the case now. :) Fingers crossed.

My final addition to your search is that Garrard used a cadmium-based paint in its early production models. If you were trolling around trying to find 301's in poor condition to try restoration you'd need more than a mask. Amazing the prices they reach 3499 Pounds Sterling. Better than Bitcoin??

Cheers

@Marc Here is a grey hammertone 301 that's just come up on sBay.

It's in Melbourne.

"Complete set Shindo bearing and platter, Plinth, RF-773 12-inch tonearm" (without headshell in the pics).

However, I'm not sure if the AU $21,000.00 is a fair asking price, I would hope that it's a typo that could be clarified with the seller.
