Hi fellow SNA members.

I have a new pair of LRS (4 days old) and run them on a Yamaha rxz11 ( 280 w@ 4ohm) but they seem very flat in their dynamics.  I have tried various positions in the room but to no avail.  They sound lifeless compared to my old 1.6 Maggie's and nad c272 power amp. I know the 1.6 has bigger panels but even so I am not impressed thus far.

I have a large room but it's not a sound volume problem for me.  It's the lack of dynamics in soundtracks which as my son says makes movies sounds the same whether you are in An Action scene or not.  I have the dynamics in the amp set to high.

Any suggestions welcome.

+1. Maggies love current, and the AV receivers that can deliver are few and far between if they exist at all. You'll get far better results using a separate 2 channel power amp running from the Yamaha to power these

Thanks everyone.I may have to look for some 2nd hand monoblocks that fit the bill.

Not necessarily!  :)  A powerful stereo amp would also do the job.

The RXZ11 was one of the best A/V Receivers made. The RXZ11 can handle low loads. I know from experience. Maybe you need your power circuit upgraded or Maybe your new speakers need running in. Andy might help here as I have never owned Brand New Planars before.

Also, you are using them for surround sound from what I read. Maybe they are crap at that.

I know a bloke here in SA using 1.7 as rear speakers, off a Carver multichannel power amp. Loves them.

Quasi ribbon, not Planar. Who knows🤔

What are you talkin 'bout, W!  xD  "Quasi ribbon " is Magnepan marketing-speak for describing the change when they shifted from glueing aluminium round-wire onto mylar to using aluminium foil (ie. 'ribbon') on mylar.  They wanted to use the word 'ribbon ' - which is sexier than 'wire' - but needed to distinguish these new drivers from the Magnepan true ribbon, which the larger models use as their tweeters.

I need to clarify that the system is running well now.  The panels have had a major improvement and the z11 is running them well in as much as I can tell without a comparison amp. The LRS are making fine music. Thanks again to everyone who commented and have a merry Xmas.

So what is the 'major improvement' to your LRSs, that make them sound great now?
