BenQ TK800M Projector- why some 4K HDR images look flat?

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

I just got the BenQ TK800M from JB Hi Fi.

Nice projector, easy to set up.  Image quality is awesome mostly, but, I am having some pain as follows:

Playing through a Panasonic UB420 disc player:

1) Youtube 4K/FHD materials look awesome!

2) Netflix played through the app in the player - Everything looks awesome!

3)  4K UHD discs like the BBC Planet Earth series documentaries, Dynasties, etc, all look awesome!

4)  1080p Blu-ray discs, all look awesome!

However, in all 4K UHD MOVIE  discs that I tested, the image is very flat during low contrast and dark scenes.   Bright and sunny scenes are somewhat fine, but they are not as nice as the above scenarios 1-4.  So, if I make an across the board changes to Brightness/Contrast/Colour, etc, it will apply to all scenes, which is not what I want to happen.

I suspect this issue has something to do with HDR settings on either the player and/or the projector.

Did anyone here have similar issues, and what did you have to do in terms of adjustments on the player or projector to solve this problem?

Thanks for your help.

P.S.  This thread in AVS forum sounds similar to mine but sadly none of the respondents provided any practical advice. https://www.avsforum.com/threads/hdr-worse-than-sdr.3168461/

I have a Benq W2700 and had similar issues until I changed my HDMI cable to a 18GBPS fibre optic one.

The difference was night and day.

Oh that’s bizarre !  I might try to swap a cable and check again.

Sounds like a HDR colour space issue.

If your projector isn't put in the correct colour mode/gamma curve for HDR, everything will look dull. Its a problem with quite a few projectors. Its manually switching colour profiles each time you watch a HDR source unfortunately, mine does it as well.

You just need to figure out what the correct colour space is for HDR or look to get a calibration done so everything is as good as it can be.

Easiest way to check that this is the issue is watch something 4k HDR on youtube (provided your youtube app or however your viewing it can display HDR). If it looks dull, then its the colour space.

Hope that helps.

Hi Johnny,

Thanks for the response.  I'm still tweaking it.  It is definitely something like what you said, and I think it may be due to "double handling" of HDR signals, as in both the player and projector are doing the same thing and over compensating each other.
